Vosa and tractors

anisboy:
Frankly, most ‘young’ lads that are driving tractors around are far better at it than most of you so called professional lorry steerers are at 'steering’your lorry!!x

There is certainly a hell of a lot of young uns that can manouvere a 40foot flat with a dolly far better than an awfull lot of folk on here that have passed a HGV test,

I am less bothered about young uns having to pass a test but until recently was getting concerned about the state of equipment on the roads at higner speeds. But in the last couple of years most of the farmers round here have uped their game with braked trailers and they nearly all have working trailer lights etc the kit is getting bigger but it seems to be of a higher standard to.

It is mad that a 16 year old who has passed the very simple tractor test on a small 100hp tractor can then jump straight in a big tractor loaded up to over 24t and drive it on the roads legally.

Paul

the 16 year old where i work has failed it twice :open_mouth:

and is that any different to an 18 year old passing their class 1 in a brewery type, mini artic setup or baby wagon and drag then jumping into a stgo truck the next day?

The way we are taught and the vehicles they use are wrong but use your common sense an 18 year old wouldnt be let loose in a low loader the next day!

are you telling me that it’s never happened?

Cruise Control:
there have been a few fastracs that i’ve struggled to overtake on dual carriageways driving at 52mph! wouldnt suprise me if some farmers have them running at 56mph!

and they’re the only ones who can legally tow 2 full length trailers at a time, they’ll be subbing for tosco next!! coming to an rdc near you soon

cannot exceed 25.9 metres ,and they are not the “only” ones
its long and complexed

johnexley.co.uk/agri.htm

To be fair they were having a purge on the 303 last week round Yeovil and towards Honiton lots pulled over

Not at that speed they can’t.

Much less experience but able to apply full concentration. i.e. Head not full of mortgages, sick parent(s), child support payments, what bill will land on the mat tomorrow, what will the wife nag about when I get home tonight?, how much will the car insurance be at renewal, etc. etc.

stevieboy308:
you can quite easily convert a trailer to run on a hydraulic brake setup or run both

And many do indeed tow old artic trailers converted to oil operated brakes on dollies behind agricultural tractors.

madmatt:
My employer runs all their tractors and trailers on Olicence and 7 weeklys as we don’t meet agricultural/forestry exemptions.

On white diesel and full weight road tax then?

d4c24a:
technically the fastrac and unimog are the only ones allowed to go over 20mph

I think you are right, though so many travel at near 40 mph now.

Denis F:
I saw them stopping a tractor & low loader with a digger on it a couple of weeks ago

Probably to see what colour fuel was in the tractor tank. Often, moving a digger needs white. (though are VOSA charged with policing HMRC issues?)

franklin:
Funny you should say that… I left junction 14 heading south on the m6 this morning around 0430 and saw a vosa galaxy crawling across the next bridge down from j14 with its flashers on, red message scrolling and it happened to be infront of a tractor!

First time I have ever seen that…

At that time of the day probably and quite rightly, checking to see if it was stolen/drunk driver/joy rider.

Yes very different he had to pass a car test, class 2 etc … then on to the arctic … tractor drivers should be shot

What would any of that have to do with VOSA? They have no powers to deal with Theft or Drink-driving.

vosa wouldnt deal with it but they would keep the offender there till the rozzers arrived

i’ve seen vosa pull a couple of brand new john deeres at castle kennedy. idiots. :unamused:
what’s the problem? they are just out trying to make a living, the same as the rest of us.
if we didn’t have these stupid rules and ridiculously inflated fees regarding operators licencing, then it wouldn’t matter.

One of the most dangerous thing with tractors is the quickie type loader on the front with spikes driving long distances on the road.
I am also appalled that they get away with a load of rear working lights switched on whilst traveling on the road.

Cruise Control:

They will only be legal as long as said trailers are EMPTY :exclamation: :exclamation:

and only one trailer can exceed 7m

I live in between York and Hull and most tractor drivrs round here are ignorant. They dont pull over and let traffic past and its hard work sometimes trying to pass loaded at 44 tonnes.Rear lights on a trailer should be used as should indicators but still many dont have them or a number plate. As for going down the road with a power arrow on th back or whatever machin it maybe the rear working lights shouldnt be on as only a red one should be lit up! Still waiting for a vosa employee to reply! My point to all this is why should farmers get away with it when we get shot to ■■■■ for it!Whats good for one is good for another!

The machinery and tractors i see on the road have an orange beacon that never works, the bulb blown or the motor for it.

Yep get very funny looks pulling up at white Derv pump and sticking 300 quid in a john deere!

the police could and should deal with it , as they also could deal with the dustcarts the travel around with the rear loading lights on too when not needed
question for you then fully loaded at 44 tons how easy is it for you to rejoin a busy road from a stand still safely ,say you have pulled over into a gate way /side turning

I’d like to add builders’ dumpers to the discussion; They’re not plated to carry loads on the public road yet work near a tip or gravel pit and you’ll see them on the road, untaxed, no lights or reg plate carrying muck and materials about.

isn’t that an every day vehicle down near Devon?
