mmmm… now I may get some slagging for this but… Many years ago (like 10 or15) when I was on excursion to in a tyre factory we were shown a machine in labs, slab of thick glass in a frame, wheel pressed onto it and rolled on it back and forth, camera underneath filming bahaviour of the tread, lug deformation etc. And I thought to myself “I bet they could fit smaller version of this into road and check if everybody’s got legal tyres”
