Harry Monk:
Yes, I wasn’t saying there isn’t an accurate one, and I’ve never driven a MAN but I have done comparisons with two Volvos, a DAF and a Scania which I’ve had as an employee and none has been accurate to within half a gallon per mile.
I think a lot of times when drivers say they are getting 10 to the gallon they are basing this solely on what the computer says, and as stated above by someone else this could be 2 mpg wide of the mark.
Yes, but when I said half a gallon a mile, obviously what I meant was half a mile a gallon, and it’s not my fault if you are too stupid to understand that.
(My ex taught me this method of argument and you have to admit, it’s a cracker! )

but, on the other hand, it may have been your stupid mistake typing that in the first place, this is where your argument is flawed

I’ve had volvo’s with a fuel computer since 1998, some are accurate, some not. The ones that aren’t accurate I get Volvo to recalibrate them, even so there is always a slight difference between truck and pump fuel figures.
It’s not rocket science to just calculate the fuel actually put in the tank,up to the filler, against the mileage since the previous fill up.Comparisons between drivers and trucks are meaningless unless it’s over the exact same route,at the exact same average speed,at the exact same gross weight and the drivers are all rotated around all the different trucks.Which still leaves possible variations in the case of wind directions and strength.

yes, but, if the same driver is getting the worst MPG out of every truck, then that points towards bad driving style
Weight and terrain are the most important factors, I did a movement from Faversham to Bude last Sunday and because the load was top-heavy I went M4/M5 rather than using the A303.
I reset the computer before I started, when I turned off of the M5 at Tiverton, it was indicating 8.1 mpg, when I arrived at Bude it was indicating 7.2 mpg.
I think mpg can end up being a bit of an obsession where you can lose sight of the bigger picture. Cutting your fuel overhead as sensibly as possible is a part of a successful haulage operation but not the only part. Tyres are another similar one.
I’ve always found the truck computer mpg figures to be out.
If I’ve got to get somewhere, then I’ve got to get there and if that means using more diesel then so be it. If I’ve got to get up a hill then I want to get up it now, not half way through next afternoon. There’s no sense in saving a fiver’s worth of diesel if it means I arrive ten minutes too late to load a £450 load and have to wait until morning instead of running with it that evening.
Take out fuel sender unit and on the pick up pipe there is a gauge filter inside the pick up pipe gentally pull that out and you will prob find its blocked up… get air line and blow all the crap out and then push it back in (may need a heavy duty cable tie or welding rod to get it pushed back in) that is something that never gets done on service you will see big difference

i have heard the same thing on the Renault pick up pipes, a friend of mine had major issues with the engine misfiring and cutting out on a premium, was the filter in the pick up pipe
are the other motors doing the same work as you? has yours done more km’s? different tires on the wagon/tread depth? the list is endless.i think its good your trying to get the best out of it, but if the motor is well looked after and your driving the best you can, dont worry about it,

Thats about it really, since I started this thread ive been driving steady trying to utilise the eco roll as madbaz has said. Ive told my boss I think its a bit thirsty so the ball is in his court as such.
As someone said the lorry is 6 years old so I wont be worrying about it anymore.
You know im a self employed driver and im not that nechanically minded, alright the lorry is using fuel but I wanted advice so I can bat straight back if anything is said. Ive made him aware I think the lorry is thirsty but I dont want them thinking its me being heavy footed… as its always the drivers fault .
Ive been given some really good advice on this thread which I appreciate and some stupid comments as well, but I think the thread has run its course.
Yes alex, there has been some good advice given to you, and also some stupid comments
As has been said earlier, don’t thrash it between the gears, drive it steadily, that does not mean ■■■■ it to 52 then cruise at that instead of on the limiter
right, here’s a nicer version of the thread, lots of argumentative posts have been removed and a few have been edited !
A few rules for this forum are-
Things that happen between employer and employee are best sorted in private and not on this forum.
If you disagree with a post, attack the post not the poster (abusive posts will be removed and if you keep posting abusive stuff you will find your rights to post may be restricted).
Carry on talking about fuel consumption, however remember If this thread goes back to the arguing it will be permanently removed.
