Volvo xl 480 57 reg - (The directors cut)

Aerodynamics don’t really kick in much below 50mph, and it’s a Volvo engine and driveline, heavy loads and steeply graded terrain are my enemies.

I reckon a lot of it is just lorry driver ■■■■■■■■ anyway, if I’m in a supermarket RDC and someone says he is getting ten to the gallon, you can bet the farm that the bloke sitting next to him is getting eleven. :stuck_out_tongue:

It often makes me chuckle that every time someone has bought new trucks in a different make I don’t really need to ask them what they’re like for fuel economy as I already know the answer will be ‘we’re getting over 10mpg on these now’.

Harry if someone says that it’s possible to get 10 mpg out of a 40 + tonner and someone else says nearer to 7 you can bet that it’s the latter figure that I’d believe and make sure that I based my costing figures on.

When they turned my 440 down to 84 kmh I was annoyed till I realised how relaxing it was! Was great never having to leave the inside lane!

Until they work out how many miles you’ve lost over the course of the year, let alone the life of the truck, considering that a truck’s productivety and therefore what it earns is based on tonne/mile of freight hauled. The gross weight is a limited constant which just leaves mileage.

Who cares, it’s not my problem as an employed driver

Harry Monk:
I dream of getting 7.5 - 8 mpg, last calculation it was 7.21 :stuck_out_tongue:

Thats all our 500 maggie was doing harry didnt matter who drove it 7.5 was a good week for it tbh. anything above “not often” was good… and to be honest most other 44t average around 7.5/8mpg … but there is always the 20mpg boys out there

10.1 - 10 .7 and the paperwork to prove it

To make you all feel better I’ve averaged 6.4 mpg this week against the usual 6.8 to 7.2 mpg  all week it seems whenever I’ve had big combines on I’ve been pulling into a headwind, and heading out of the wind with smaller stuff on :frowning:

Just accelerate slower and drive at 80kmh.

i used to drive as an emplyed driver a 460 xl globby on an 03 plate all round europe from denmark to portugal and it never used to return less than 8.5 to the galon pulling a mixture of trailers from flats fridges euroliners it was the best truck i ever had and never missed a beat in 350000km i would love to have it back but sadly those days are gone my advise to you is to back it off 1 or 2 clicks and be a bit steadier on the throtle peddle let the ishift do its own thing if theres a problem with the truck then its not your problem its the problem of the boss man let him fix it

Sorry if ive not noticed but are these figures straight off the computer or worked out properly?

My figures are off the computer, but going to work it out manually this week.

be prepared for a shock, the computer normally makes it look better than it actually is

this is why i always use the calculator, and not rely on the computer

Agreed up to a couple of mpg out usually.

^ What Stumpy said. :frowning:

Oh right.

Well ive been nursing it this week and so far the computer is showing 8.3 mpg but ive told steve ( the gaffer ) so its up too him.

This week had been a ■■■■ for back country roads and what seems like farmers fields, I had a collection of tiles from a village call " cry " I nearly cried when I saw it on the map.

Mine’s the other way round, computer is worse than actual, by about 0.8 mpg. Maybe something to do with aftermarket fuel tanks I think.

Years ago I had a car, can’t remember what, and it was one of the earliest ones with mpg reading on the dash, it actually used to measure the fuel used by pumping it round a race which had a little ball in it, and a bulb next to it and a sensor opposite. So every time the ball passed the bulb it cut the light to the sensor. That was very accurate, I presume trucks do it through the engine ecu? Either way, I’ve never known one to be accurate.

it has always been VERY close on the MAN’s when i have checked them with the calculator

Yes, I wasn’t saying there isn’t an accurate one, and I’ve never driven a MAN but I have done comparisons with two Volvos, a DAF and a Scania which I’ve had as an employee and none has been accurate to within half a gallon per mile.

I think a lot of times when drivers say they are getting 10 to the gallon they are basing this solely on what the computer says, and as stated above by someone else this could be 2 mpg wide of the mark.

Mine is usually spot when doing A or B road work, but comes back at +.2 mpg better than actual on long continuous runs.
