Just had an interesting chat with a fellow haulier.Well it is sunday morning after all!!!
Wanted some advice on Volvo fitted with EGR. Decided I was the man to talk to as I have got them
As I pointed out mine are Euro 5 SCR models with an old Euro 3 fitted with a particulate trap
As he is not a member on here I have been asked to post the wealth of knowledge that is trucknet!!!
All I can say is the vehicle is for sale at a dealer its an 09 -09 reg 440 BHP EGR Euro 4 but he is not sure on that in 6 x 2 Globetrotter I shift gearbox
Thanks in advance chaps
Struggling to understand…
My mate has a euro4 57 plate with EGR. He hasn’t had any bother, but some say SCR is a better solution for that engine
Sorry Chaps I should have explained…
My friend ailso runs Volvo fitted with SCR He wants to know the pitfalls if any with the EGR system

Well as I thought Volvo only did SCR and have never offered an EGR engine, that should answer your question.
Bought volvo last year had ex stobart 440 non adblue egr ex walking floors
He said few things prone around 500000km cant remember exactly what
And few grand to put right
Went for a 480 scr after

I have heard they can be prone to turbo failure can anyone confirm this
I work at a Volvo dealership myself and can speak from experience of fixing several, that EGR Volvo’s are very prone to turbo failure. Long story short - stay away from them as they are bad news.
If you can get me the registration or chassis number I can check it’s service history for the fellow haulier you spoke to and see if it has had any turbo failures or any other problems.

Many thanks for that offer I will try to find out the details
Just out of interest is the EGR version the same basic engine as the SCR??
I operate a Renault fitted with the DXI 11 450 And have just replaced injector sleeves
another post I have read on here said the D13 have had the same problems anyone else
had the problem on this model of engine■■?
Ive got a dxi 500 euro .5 in a magnum
570000km only major thing was do engine side plate mod
Cost me £850 in parts and 250 to do it common thing on the volvo engine

The basic engines are the same, the emissions stuff is all bolt on, whether it’s SCR or EGR. Both are flawed technologies, but EGR is probably the worse thing you can do to a diesel engine (this is a quote from the man at ■■■■■■■ who invented EGR
)
The D13 is prone to injector cup failure, the main symptom is losing prime so it’s hard to start, but by then a lot of diesel has got into your oil as it’s a gradual process, you could have drained the oil quite a few times and the cross contamination will cause premature bearing failure further on in the engine’s life.
Anybody running a D13 should do oil analysis to find out about this asap, fuel dilution in your oil is the second worse thing you can do to a diesel engine (this is a quote from me
)
Other than that, the D13 is a great engine, plenty of poke, good economy and the main engine parts are very reliable (except those ■■■■ injector cups) the emissions control systems on the other hand… 50/50 like all the rest, get a good one and you’ll be fine, get a bad one and you’ll wish you had set fire to your money
both non ad blue and ad blue systems on 13 litre volvos have there faults, i think the lack of knowledge in dealers about the egr is the downside as some dealers have never come across em therefore know very little about em because they’re not as common as the ad blue ones, the turbos do seem to be a problem on egr but then a few grand on a catalyst silencer on the ad blue or a pump unit and dosage valve and not forgetting the heated ad blue hoses which believe me get changed far more frequent than egr turbos, but then again it might be the lack of egr’s out there compared to the ad blue motors, A common fault on both is the oil cooler side cover which i can almost certainly guarantee will leak coolant at some point in its life which is a lot bigger job on the egr’s as virtually all the egr system has to come off to access the side cover, and i agree with previous comments injector sleeves are a common fault on the 13’s, its like owt though theres good and bad motors of makes and models we just hope we haven’t bought the one built on friday afternoon
EGR is fine for the first few months, Then you’ll find a large amount of soot build up in the inlet manifold, More so if it’s used on local multi drop round town type work. Sensors get clocked up and eventually fuel consumption will be sky high.
The best thing to do is put a blanking plate on it.
