Seeing those pictures together, there can only be one answer: between 1970 and 1975, the wipers could be anywhere. Maybe the more modern lower mounting position was an added-cost option?

Hi anorak,
You may? Not realise just how right you are there.during 2000/2001 when we restored my f88,we used three different cabs for parts and we were continually surprised at how different they were back then.we even had three different types of interior lights
Regards andrew.

Looking around the internet, I cannot find one F89 with upstairs wipers. There are plenty of steel-grille 88s with downstairs wipers, on the European sites. I reckon the top wipers option was kept on for more conservative third-world markets like Britain, explaining the plastic-grille F88s so equipped in the above picture.

I found this oddity here: berglitruckstop.no/viewtopic … c&start=60

I get the impression that the wiper position was varied to relieve boredom on the production line! :unamused:
My 1976, wide plastic grille 290 had downstairs wipers.

I think the original wipers downstairs appeared in 1969 from factory line. But with the air system some users made an own system which reintegrated upstairs ,even on F 89.

Hey, the histoy of F88 wipers is simple, but for the UK they stayed 1 or two years longer at the top as it was an option in those two years I doubt that.
Here were the wippers at the top till end 1969,but for the UK they stayed a bit longer at the top (maybe the obligate by law) I shall show here some pic’s how to identify the F88 sometimes there is only a small difference, but with this you can identify neary every year of build. This are only the changes to identify as you see them at the first look outside.
Spoke or disc wheels depend of the customer, but in the years spoke wheels were an options and then disc wheels were an option.

As you will see here.
1 first late summer 1965 no steps
2 1966 steps
3 1967 typ F88 to the front of the doors
4 late 1968 big mirrors arms
5 1969 new flashers
6 some months later new black plastic grabhandles
7 end '69 wippers to de bottem
8 air intake end '70
9 ('71)some months later head hatch.
10 black grille 1973 model
11 black headlight rings 1974 model
12 big wheel studs rims '75-'76 and brown trim.

This are all as delivered straight from factory, but a bit can differ from country to country.

Hopefully I made a bit clarity to the questions.
Cheers Eric,

hey, the same on the 4951.

1 First model in 1964 for all countries, and presented in Belgium too with flashers at the top.
2 To get them through Belgium MOT, the flashers had to be lowered to be allowed on the road.
3 new graphandles, flasher for B,NL,LUX,FR and maybe some other countries.
4 Air intake at the right too, because of new heating system.
5 Very last with flashers as the F88

Cheers Eric,

Hey Michel, Is it still allowed to go over the Mont Cenis with an empty artic under 19 tonnes.
Because not for next or the following year, but once in my life as a memory of the good time.
And is it still possible mostly on RN or D roads because of péage and to enjoy surroundings slowly.

Bye Eric,

Excellent work Tiptop495. You don’t get this sort of detail in the books. God bless the internet, and all those who sail on her!

Am I right in saying that the top wipers were air, and the bottom wipers were electric, or was there an air bottom wiper variant at some stage? I still suspect that UK models had a top wiper option from the factory after 1969, if only to allow Volvo to get rid of the old stock.

The wipers changed from air to electric on the 290 on the later ‘P’ reg models - officially anyway , whether it was at the same time as the brown trim update , i don’t know & knowing Volvo ,probably not :unamused:

Boris you are correct , my dads 290 -a very late N reg , had air wipers ,the twist clockwise to work knob was very stiff to operate , the first with electric wipers at Swifts had the brown trim & bigger fuel tank .

Hey Anorak, tanks for the compliments, but only did what was asked in the questions

The electic wipers came with the brown trim,so after mid '70’s.
Much much to late as were the wipers on the top a disaster too, some tried and did as we tried to made them electric with 12V motors en converter.
Not easy but it worked. And as soon as came the electrics from factory,a kit was available end easy to convert.

Cheers Eric,

Hi all,
My 1974 240 was originally small grille and air wipers.we soon changed that

That’s a late 1968 F88. I know this because Tiptop495’s guide above tells me.
