i have recently joined your forum and wondered if NZ Jamie can remember where he took the pictures of the cabs
on South Island.i am restoring an F88 and would like to contact the guy if possible
thanks volvoguy

G’day Volvoguy mate,
Yes I do know where these cabs were and I say were as they have sadly been scrapped now,but not to worry mate as these were the rough ones and the bloke who owns them has pleanty more complete G88’s and heaps of parts.
I’m in Europe now until the middle of May,I have his details at home in NZ,he’s a top bloke and loves old Volvos.
Send me a “PM” mate with your E-mail address and an idea of what you looking for and I’ll get hold of him when I get home.
Cheers Jamie

The F89 was reputed to be much more powerful which in those better days was all that mattered.

330hp is more powerful than 240 :stuck_out_tongue:

If you were listening earlier you will realise that the 290hp was only made for the UK market, probably through pressure from Jim McElvie.

Volvo put 330hp in an 89 to raise the minimum power to weight ratio. In Germany it was 8hp per tonne.

It’s more powerful than 290 as well  but who the zb was Jim Mc Elvie :open_mouth:  probably yet another Northerner/Scotsman    who hated powerful motors like most of them up there   .But those Germans are often just as stupid as only they could be calling for a higher powered truck than here in a country with a lower speed limit :open_mouth:

Go and sit at the back of the class and read the history of Volvo Truck, Ailsa Trucks and Renfrew before posting anything else

A piece of useless information perhaps but wasn’t it Cadwalladers of Oswestry who had the first F88 in the UK? I think it might have been a “G” reg and there was some sort of ceremony arranged by Volvo when “G” at the beginning of the registration number was eventually issued.(on a Volvo)

Shoot me if I’m wrong!!

That takes me back to my old school days Wheelnut when I either got told to stand in the corner all day or hit with a big stick for arguing with the teachers    .I know a bit about Ailsa Trucks but obviously not enough but at the end of the day it was the demands of the foriegn lot which led to the more powerful F89 over the F88 not the Scottish as you said yourself  But in Britain drivers were probably driving 290 F88’s faster than the continentals were driving 330 F89’s.As someone said on here before it’s often just a case of gearing the thing right IF there’s enough power and torque to begin with so that’s probably why Jim Mc Elvie called for the 290 over the 240.While it’s possible to gear a relatively gutless wagon down to pull well but run relatively slowly (unlike what some people think) you can’t gear a gutless truck up to run faster. So I obviously learnt enough at school to know that the 330 F89 would have been a better spec for here while the 290 F88 would have been ok on the continent.Having said that they’re now making 500 horse + wagons geared to run at 80 mph + fitted with speed limiters set at 85 kmh.Go figure :open_mouth: :unamused:

Siddle C. Cook of Consett was one of the first to have a FB88 I am not sure if it was “G” or “H” reg but when Pickfords bought them out it was based at Birtley depot and was run at around 100 tons and had an eight speed box and the exhaust brake also cut the fuel off as I found out the hard way as I did a couple of night shifts on it and used the exhaust brake to check speed to change down and the brake stayed on a fraction after the button was released so it cut the engine as I changed down lucky enough I was able to restart without any mishap and it never occurred to me to shove it into gear as I was not used to a synchro-mesh box but it must have been one the early ones into this country.
cheers Johnnie

Hello,I find it interesting that a “G” reg 88 is put as the first in the UK,I have a few “F” reg ones in my collection, heres 1 from page 1 of the scrapbook and the first 3 in the Golding line up have “F” regs too.

My 3 pennath for what its worth.

Cheers Bubbs.

Cheers for that, you better shoot me then!!

This F88 is still going strong.

A young 22 year old Fly sheet in Patras stood by his F89. Its reg was XCG 600R & I bought it off Comptons of Poole, dunno its history before I had it, does anybody else?

Here it is again sporting a roof rack & ladders. This pic was taken up by Lamia loading Ouzo for Hamburg.

Nice FB88 logger from VOLVO sales brochure.

And this one, also from the same brochure, again an FB88.

Ex Ferrymasters (France) loading 2nd hand JCB’s in Peterborough, all destined for M/E.

Don’t recall seeing many 88’s with front-mounted exhaust.

Believe this one is an 89. Anyone got any ideas where its from?

How about Copenhagen, Friis is a common name in Denmark and 05 seems to be the area code 0045
