a 13 litre block is’nt limited to what Volvo or whoever decide to put on the door of a lorry, a 13 litre digger may churn out more same as 1 in marine guise. I’m no engineer like but thats my two penneth.
Your comparing 3 different types of engine there, your motor, digger and boat use different types of engine.
So if Volvo build a dump truck & decide to use a 13 litre engine they design a brand new 1 do they? Or do they use the same block with modifications for whatever purpose its use will be?
As stated I’m no engineer but the Marine 150 Gardner in our workshop looks just like the one out of a lorry barring some bits & pieces or do they have a block for every occasion now?
I dont know the in’s n out’s of every motor out there but I do know that a different block has been used for truck and for plant, For example the smaller boat’s have used a Volvo engine called a Penta.
yorkshireborn:
recently bought a scania 164 480bhp on an 04 plate and was so dissapointed with the performance. mpg was ok but pulling power was none existant.
i rang john at scan-tune and explained the problem, he came out (09/10) changed air and fuel filter worked some more of his magic, plugged his laptop in fiddled around and then announced ‘job done’.
i paid by switch and with great sceptisism set out hoping more than believing, that my unit had undergone the same type of change that clark kent does in the phone box. i instantly noticed the engine pulled away at a lot lower rpm. finally got some weight on 12/10 and am still over the moon with the difference. from j28 m1going north down sliproad and up the hill towards tibshelf with at 40000kgs it used to crest at about 38 maybe 40mph, now its climbing on the limiter.
i was prior to this possibly the biggest doubter of remaping or chipping, but now, if you get the right man it can and for me has worked miracles. john came highly recommended and now i can confirm the myth that ‘if you have a problem and nobody else can help maybe you can hire john @ scan-tune’
i am now saving about 5% on fuel so on my normal 1000lts aweek its about £50.
glad you liked his work yorkshireborn, john is the only man i will let near my trucks for that type of work,as i have said in many past posts there is only one guy to trust and john is the man, when you get used to in give it a few weeks you will prob see a even better return on fuel “belive me” it will take you a good cpl of weeks to learn how it behaves now its been remaped but i can honestly say it will get slightly better and the best thing wiht john he knows HIS STUFF !! and he just aint in it for the money well thats a bit of a lie but i think you know what i mean on that best money you will ever spend, daz
Beetie:
You looked happy plodding along in yours yesterday Daz, passed you by j38 with a ds smith packaging trailer on. Looked like it was easy going anyway!
killing time beetie, just killing time, getting sooooooooooooooo lazy these days i could do with someone to press the loud pedal for me as well
NB12:
Following the remap how many horses are now under the loud pedal Globby?.
with one yorkshire tightarse at the wheel, it’s probably running at 580 donkey power, not horse power and for every 15ltr of derv he puts in the tank he has to add a carrot, to get it to pass the downhillkettles, and only if it’s going downhill

i aint paying for a carrot so you can forget that carrots cost money man, behave ya self will ya, i turn the ing off going dowm hills to save even more fuel, and it will still pass a down hill kettle clap trap boiling racer with no power thats jsut how good the mighty scanias aaaaaaare!!

a LOT i just darent use em all, i could even give a down hill clap trap built on dole kettle boiling racer 150 horses and still have more than one of those kettle boilers would EVER HAVE!!!
Goaty:
Rob K’s favourite FH , has been “remapped” by Powerchips.
Factory 460 to 550 galloping ponies!
Previous motors I’ve used, generally O/D’s, that have been chipped/remapped (same thing ain’t it ?) to 500+ bhp, all pulled like the preverbial train, though all but a couple of them kicked out a lot of black [zb] under acceleration.
I’ve only had my new’un on the road for 3 days but so far no excess smoke.
Fuel consumption looks ok on the dash computer but I’ve yet to confirm this manually as it has 750 litres either side so I haven’t got to the bottom of them yet!
mine is a 10 year old scania 124 420 chipped to 500… it has 2.1million km on clock… smokes abit lol under a good load at low revs… dont know if this is down to the re-map or just the general age and mileage of the unit… what i can say is it pulls like a animal! last week i flew past a stralis 540 on corley hill… never drops more then half a gear… everyweek its in the 9’s for fuel… on friday i went from aldridge to coventry empty… 9ton container to felixstowe… and a 25ton reefer back… averaged 9.88 for the day… was impressed with that tbh…
fly sheet:
My main concern was the getting hot thing which my 420 did after 1st getting chipped, I’m told by this lot powerchips or whatever this will not be a problem. Keep us updated Goatman & if you want to get your tare down I’ll willingly take that fuel off your hands I’ll let you all know how it goes & thanks for your input.

hi mate… in regards to getting hot… i was told by a truck tuner a few years ago at truckfest peterbrough that they recommend aftermarket exhausts ie stacks to help release the heat… dont know if this helps or not …
NB12:
Just wondered what the outcome was here?, have you had improved mpg and journey times?.
I was just talking about it today NB12 & if I’m honest it has’nt made a lot of difference if any at all, its still [zb] on fuel low 6’s most of the time & going up Windy Hill its the same as before just hangs on in the same gear as before. it sounds a tad different ticking over. If I had to replace it I would give the 13 litre a swerve. As for them telling me it was 610bhp its more like a strangled 500 I’d say. £350 it cost & if it saves a tiny bit of fuel over the time I have it I’ll have my money back in the end. You just can’t beat litres in the end, 16’s better than 13 end of!!!

Just out of interest, is THIS the truck in question?
If so, then it explains why you are “only” getting 6mpg.
Ok just for comparison we have a Daf 480 Space cab on a regular run . Standard spec - no extras under the bonnet.Off road last week for yearly test .
Replaced it with a 460 Volvo which has been remapped / chipped ( not sure which - wasn’t there when it was done ) and is knocking out 540 hp (confirmed on rolling road ).
Before chipping / remapping an absolute pig to drive and bad mpg (high 5’s low 6’s) according to previous owner .
Now out pulling the 480 DAF up the same hills and much less gear changing .
RESULTS
Daf 480 - for one week 1144 liters of Diesel 9.3 mpg
Volvo 540 - for one week exactly the same run - 1180 liters 9.2mpg.It was also wet and windy which didn’t help.
Draw your own conclusions
a few things to be aware of…
1.radiators are not always designed for a power increase.i have a s reg fh12 which the previous owner had chipped from 380 to 460(■■) with no modifications.when i’ve driven it i’ve noticed it runs very hot on a long uphill with a 44ton train weight,ie up that hill on the M1 n/b before shepshed she’ll go all the way up in top gear but by the top the warning buzzer has just come on and the temp is at the bottom of the red line.i’m sure a new radiator would cure this as i think the 380 radiator is smaller than the 420 radiator, and it’s an old radiator.but it’s something to bear in mind if doing a big jump from a fllet spec 380.
2.clutches are a similar problem.the same truck has had 2 clutches though both of the drivers using it at the time were suspect, having come out of 16 speed tga’s with a comfort shift into a 12 speed volvo.i’m guessing missed splits and gears were just pressed on with causing a big slipping problem which quickly shredded the clutch although this time it’s had a heavy duty version of the old clutch.
this truck is fairly old but everyone who uses it seems to get on ok presumably because there is definetly good power available.the big hill coming from dover just before the m25 dropped her down the gears a little but didn’t cause the buzzer to come on,and she was pretty heavy.
whether this is 460bhp is open to question but compared to a 2002 420 which i have it’s definatly got more, but they have both done a million k’s now.

Its to much of a power hike,380~460, its at its max the 460 has a bigger rad etc, etc, should have took it to 420/430 and it wouldnt run hot on climbs, but it hasnt hurt it so much yet,
just thought i would chip in her(pardon the pun) theres a famous saying"theres no replacement for displacement" mor cubic inches more power. know on to chips ecu remaps etc etc, you can re map, increase a diesel engines bhp and torque to unbelievable levels, but without other modifications they will be unsafe. when adding more fuel and adjustign the timing(advancing) of the engine to create more power you also need more cold dense air to be bought in and you also need to exhaust that air quiker also.
When increasing the amount of fuel with some programmers etc you have to ask yourself are you exceeding the manufacturers reccomended fuel line pressure■■? will the fuel pump last■■? perhaps pull those expensive diesel injectors out and replace the nozzles with 50 to 200bhp nozzles to get that exact quantity of fuel in to the cylinder.to burn correctly. Manufacturers build there engines so they can do every job i.e highway truck, dump truck, city truck, and they are always almost turned down working well within there safe working range.
I myself work on trucks(semis) over here in canada and own a dodge 5.9l ■■■■■■■ pick up truck. Stock horspower is 350bhp and 600ft/lbs torque i can tune mine by the press of a few buttons to 600bhp and 800ft/lbs of torque quite safley. Now my transmission on the other hand wouldnt last very long if i ran everywhere on the highest settings, which i dont by the way. anyway i hope this was of some help to you, my last bit of advice is dont overtune your engines, if you want more safer power go for more cubic inches.
