If the checkpoint isn’t to far away, it would be a similar scenario as going in for a voluntary check weigh, if it’s not right you should be free to go back to the loading point to get it sorted.
If you did that and they agreed the loads not adequately secured then they could fine you for having already taking it on the road, and could make you sort it out before carrying on.
You’d be best off contacting them another way and asking the question. I emailed them to ask something else and about 2 weeks later I got a reply from a current DVSA officer telling me what the book says and what he’d personally do. Email address on gov website or search for traffic commissioner and details are there.
You could take some photos and send it to them as an example of one you’d refused to take on the road and ask what their view on it is.
Simple answer,IF your not happy with a load its up to YOU if you take it out or not, baring in mind you could get done by the DVSA for taking it on the road in the first place. Its YOUR Licence at stake not the Companies STAND YOUR GROUND take photo`s for future use if needed

Not load related but I remember a lad years ago who upon starting with his new employer set out on his first trip and then took it upon himself to take a detour to a ministry of transport test station for them to check the truck was roadworthy before he continued the journey. It wasn’t, 1 GV9 for a minor air leak (a nylon chassis lube pipe had rubbed a small hole in a metal air pipe) and that was the end of his employment with that company!
Pete.
I can’t believe this thread was started, but to carry on with " the hypothetical situation " what happens when you turn into the vosa station and the load falls off? Do you have the defence of I was bringing it here to check if it was safe to travel? It is clearly not safe!! You will get exactly as you deserve!! Also your reputation as a spineless grass will be firmly cemented. “Hypothetically"of course.

I never had a problem with " getting a tug” in over forty years, but I never ever had a thought about deliberately going out of my way to cause trouble for any employer. Grow up .
Spot on! In life you just use your common sense, if its unsafe don’t take it. if it doesn’t look like its going to fall you be ok just remember to slow down for roundabouts
Your probably fine though. Look at all the pallet distribution network deckers. Every night a totally mixed load of stuff goes on each trailer to a hub, and a totally mixed load comes back. It would be pretty much impossible to ratchet strap some of the pallets that are over 400kgs because of what’s on the other side of it. If everyone played exactly to the rules in terms of nothing over a total of 400kg on each internal strap then nothing would ever go to the hub and nothing would ever come back.
I haven’t read the whole thread, so ignore me if this has been said, but instead of driving into a DVSA depot, why not make an anonymous call naming your company. This happens more than we realise by concerned drivers. They might just turn up and start poking their noses in.
You could go to the checkpoint and the firm might get a GV9, then you might get a P45

Hypothetical Q -If, as a driver, you go voluntarily to a checkpoint regards questioning load security after workplace says it’s ok but you don’t think it is what would DVSA do if they agree it’s not safe?
Would they take action against driver?
There would be no access to put rachet strap over btw as always to very top of trailer and preloaded when we go to pick up so it’s not as if we have chance to strap as we go so if turned up at checkpoint it’s not as if can rectify there and then which is why questioning what view would they take ?
In bit of dispute over DDs as work says it’s ok to just use the internal for pallets on both decks.
I have doubts as the combined weight of the 2 pallets lower/upper is around 600kgs. I’m fine with the singles at the front but not the rest on DD as they’re expecting a single internal to be ok for both decks.
It’s come to a head as they’re now actively disciplining over insufficient strapping, which I’m fine with but when asked about DD got the answer above. They can’t whine about strapping correctly when they don’t offer facilities or access on DDs.

Are the curtains rated as load bearing?
Our mob actively dicourage climbing on trailers when curtains are open so have to use the internal nets/straps. Never go on to the top deck.
They will not be able to give you the sort of answer you are looking for anyway. It is not a black or white thing like putting the truck over the weighbridge.
With load security it is only their opinion if the load is safe or not, untested in court, and they would leave themselves vulnerable if it later came loose. Most likely they would just give you a copy of the load security matrix and give you the same reception anyone gets anywhere that turns up and creates extra work.
Also don’t let this place distort reality not nearly so much refusing to take stuff and strapping of bog rolls goes on in real life as you would think from on here where there’s a constant competition amongst a ■■■■■■■■ of fannies to out fanny each other.
I think the current winner was someone who claimed to refuse to take a truck out because there wasn’t a no smoking sign in the cab but that could have easily been out-fannied by now without me noticing.

Someone at our place refused to take a load because they couldn’t strap it. The load was loose rolls of bubble wrap weighing about 10kgs each, so a full trailer would total a couple of tons if that, impossible to strap, the only way of securing them is literally against the curtain. He refused to take it. Does that out fanny your one?
