Voluntary redundancys yet taking on subbies

the container firm in cannock for which i work have asked us for voluntary redundancys at which they will pay UPTO £6000 for the loss of your job? even though the company has taken on 10 subbies to help cover our work■■? is this a sign of whats to come■■? they say they are buying our jobs so that if they feel the need they can take on other people at a later date without getting into any trouble for doing so,is this something they can do ■■?

is this something they can do

Yeah I beleave so, though I would be getting Union involved just make sure. and also making sure severance is delivered correctly, i think its Tax free, statutory redundancy is, max £350 per years service. though if its a big concern as i suspect then they will have checked their ground first.

Is this the container firm from Cannock who messed about with the wages retes last year, coz if it is then take the cash and run. If what they changed last year hasnt sorted company bottom line out, then read the writing mate, IMHO :open_mouth:

YOU cannot be redundant, it’s the job you do that is redundant.
if they are taking on others to do your job you are not redundant.
Nothing to stop them buying your jobs out, but if they actually terminate your employment and call it redundancy whilst employing someone to do your job, then you MAY have a case for unfair dismissal, regardless of wether they have paid you out or not.

Using subbies is not taking on or employing someone to do their work. That’s getting another company to cover the work the used to do in house.

Voulentary redundancy is totaly different to being made redundant, The co will claim to have forcast there business is going to shrink, and they are offering the best deal to existing employees, the use of subbies is to save on capital cost, (although if as a subbie I knew that it would be pro-forma invoice for every job) redundancy means the job no longer exists, probably the co as well.
For me if the deals good take it as the next offer may be you have to take it.

take the money and run.

Thanks for the replys chaps but I would like to add that I do enjoy my job & would rather stay than leave, its not a bad job, it just suffers from the people that think they know how it should be run, same as other big firms if what I belive is true lol
But have been told today that they need to lose some drivers due to losing a contract! But that contract has been taken on by the company MDs family relation(brother/inlaw) which seems a little underhanded to say the least, well should all come out in the wash as they say

Container subby’s do run around for a pittance so they’re probly thinking why not just get them in rather than put expensive go juice in that there expensive wagon.

Ah yes pentalvers! Made me redundant (and 19 others) a couple of years back when the recession first really kicked in. We were let go one day and within 48 hours were on the phone asking us to go back on temporary contracts. I don’t think my call lasted longer than 15 seconds, with a quick reply of get ■■■■■■!

Correct Neil, subbies work cheaper and if there is no work they don’t have to pay them to stand about all day scratching their err things. They could make everyone redundant and just sub it all out, it is legal and above board.

Is Alan Suthan still with Penta or did he leave when Murrel took the money?

I worked for p&o good job but subbies were cheaper so all there trucks went. Now all subbies
