Anybody of a certain age will remember Radio 1 in the 80s, when it was actually good.
So there’s a series of 50 1 hour casts on BBC sounds that replay those day’s shows.
Steve Wright (when he was cool
) with all the characters in his show, like Sid, Mr Mad, Mick Jagger and Keith.
Mike Read breakfast show, (Mike Read 275 and 285 jingle that everybody knew
)
Mike Smith,.Nicky Campbell, the legendary Gary Davies, Simon Mayo breakfast show, to the later stuff like Mark and Lard (which I never really got into tbh) right up to Chris Moyles.
it even goes back further to Noel.Edmonds, Alan Freeman and Rosko.
Btw does anybody remember Mark Page around 84 ish?
He was a smoggy who used to say ‘‘Me Mark Page’’ and always finish his show with ‘’ B’ bye now’ that everybody used to pick up on and say…(well my crowd did anyway.
)
He got sacked after turning up on a Saturday morning show with a hangover,.so he just played records and said absolutely ■■■■ all the entire show as he was too ill.
…
No? …just me?
ok then.
Anyhoo you can pick out the hour segments that interest you, and if you were a R1 fan in those days before it all turned to crap (or we just got older
) check it out, there are some good memories on there.
I used to like Mark Page given that we lived not too far apart. Unfortunately for him he’s currently answering Police questions in a room with stripey windows. No charges yet so I’ll not mention the offences, but it’s all there on the internet machine.

Not mates with his old colleagues Jimmy Saville and DLT was he?
I’ll have a look.
Edit. FFS!
It’s on the BBC News page, so it’s official.
It’s Gary Glitter league stuff ffs, child ■■■ charges and in the Far East.
Reckon he’ll be saying ‘‘B’bye now’’ for a long stretch.
No wonder I could not find him on the podcasts.
Well at least if he gets cold on a night he can always ask them to put another bar on his window!
hmm with a moustache like that,he must be guilty of all charges
I can only remember listening to the midweek chart show in the early 1970’s when I went home from school for lunch and usually didn’t bother going back for the afternoon.
Other than that I thought radio 1 was crap and preferred Caroline during the 1960’s.
Then Capital on 539 and 194 AM and 95.8 FM when it started with DJ’s like Dave Cash and Roger Scott.
Other parts of the country would have missed that they should have let it broadcast national.
Also Radio Luxembourg when driving on the continent and here at night.
Always remember the summers of '75 and '76 warm breeze blowing through the bedroom window and Luxembourg on the radio.

So mainly Capital and Luxembourg in the day for me.

Yep,.Johnny Walker with the midweek chart on school dinner break in 70s, great days…
And Radio Luxembourg 208, …Wow
Cheers for that, ,.that vid brought back some memories of listening to the likes of Paul Burnett, Mark Wesley,.and Kid Jensen far too late at night in bed on school nights
,
A lot of those DJs went to R1 in the 70s, Burnett,.Stuart Henry (who carried on DJing with MS with great difficulty, so his Mrs eventually joined him on the radio.) Mike Read to name a few.
When I started trucking I still listened to Rob Jones and Bob Stewart , Tony Prince and the like on night runs.
Think it finished UK broadcasting around 88ish??
Later on I always intended to go and have a look at Radio Luxembourg studios while I was over there,.I used to load carpets near, but never got around to it.
The station was used by the Nazis in WW2 to broadcast propaganda by the British traitor ‘Lord Haw Haw’ incidentally.
I need to catch up on what happened to Little Poppy

That’s interesting I never knew that.Maybe that explains the power and coverage that it was known for.
Luxembourg was merged into the RTL network which were/are also good on the continent.
There’s also France Bleu over there which is where I first heard stuff like Ellah Ellah by France Gall great record. Also Be my Baby Victoria Paradis and Alizee’s records much better than Spice Girls. It plays a great eclectic mix of Brit/US and some obscure Euro stuff and vintage continental even some 20’s/30’s.
Northants 96 was a great station at night in the 1980’s.
It’s all available on the internet now.I think localised radio was silly.A lot of the country certainly missed some great entertainment in the case of Capital during the early days.Dave Cash and Roger Scott were legends of the DJ world.
