Viennia to berlin

The autoroute and sat nav is sending me throw czech rep to berlin it is 87miles shorter then nuremberg A9 to berlin what are the roads like in czech rep are they very hilley they dont take euro so can i pay on fuel card.

Fairly hilly, my advice is that you find out about the vignette before going via Czech, I believe it is very pricey.

Yes, it is hilly, and this time of year is particularly prone to snow. However, weather permitting, it can be done in a shift, whereas in my experience, going right across Austria and then up through Germany will take you more than 10hrs and cost a fair bit more. You will need a PREMID toll box, which
can be bought on the border and at most service stations. It can be paid for with DKV or UTA cards, though i’m not sure about any of the other fuelcards. The box can either be post-paid via your card or pre-paid by topping-up at fuel stations. The cashier should be able to advise the amount of credit you’ll require.
I’d check the weather reports first, though I still reckon direct through Czech is pretty safe.

DO you have snow chains and winter tyres fitted■■?
Some times it is better to take the longer route
I have tried to find a site which shows the road conditions
in English but had no luck as yet

As said, going via CZ is shorter and can be done in 10hrs, via Germany I’d guess 12-14; although this time a year…
CZ is not as comfy as A and D, but got cheaper fuel and toll too.
Don’t take the E49 via Ceske Budejovice, that’s asking for trouble.
Head north from Vienna, A5/B7 to Drassenhofen/Mikulov border crossing, get your toll obu there, if not then there’s Agip fuel station further up the road, try there. If not, another fuel station further up the road, after big bridge over dam. All sorts of cards accepted, premid.cz is the website.
Up to Brno, onto D1 for Prague - busy, bumpy ride, may be damped by snow
Non-existant northern ring around Prague, can be pain, jsut follow signs for Teplice, D8, E55.
D8 is fine, bit of it missing after Lovosice, after Usti nad Labem gets hilly and main type of weather is “foggy”.
Stop at Breitenau to hand in your OBU and get deposit back.
A17 and A13 for Berlin, easy.

Weather-wise: snowing since Monday, with breaks sure.

You’ll need winter tyres to be legal on the Czech D1 and D8 - and all over Germany - when it’s snowy - see the other thread.

Harv,

I’m guessing you’re in the 18t Luckings? You will find it difficult to find Total stations, or stations that take Eurotraffic until you get back into Germany, but CZ would be the best route, but if you’ll need a bit more time due to the weather. Give me a shout if you need any more info. I am in 1611. Cheers

Paul

so you know what snow is  I’ve heard that A21 Vienna bypass was closed due to snow.
Anyway, Total card is OK for CZ toll box, not sure about fuel stations and motels though.
The toll system is very similar to the austrian one, one small box. Guys selling them can help you to set it up. You’ll need 1500CZK (~60e) deposit and top up some credit, they’ll be able to tell you how much for entire journey (~1000 for a 40t I’d guess).
Weather forecast says more snow on Fri and Sat, -15 at night, windy…
Jump leads, snow chains, tow bar, shovel, gloves, fur hat…

You may need Chains.Good Road, but Snow covered mostly.Cheap and good Food the Road along
