VI/VOSA at Woolwich Ferry

two days running, a driver from the depot has been stopped on the South Side of The Woolwich Ferry, London, and produced his Tacho’s, and had his vehicle checked by the VOSA/VI.
They are leaving the branded lorries alone and choosing the unmarked trailers and Units that use the ferry.

Monday, our driver found he was in posession of 6 illegal tacho’s, because he had been driving on break permanently! and warned that a £30,000 fine could be issued! should have seen his face when he got back to the yard! and he told the VI/VOSA thats the way he had been doing his tacho for the past 18 months!
there response…a visit will be arranged within the next three weeks to our depot, to speak with the transport manager… we haven’t got one of those!

question is…who will be responsible at depot level when they visit, if we haven’t a TM and the depot manager left a month ago? our operators license is registered to a company that is part of our parent companies portfolio, but i couldn’t tell you where there based.

i suppose the cpc holder will be held responsible.

whos running the depot if you have no tm?

is there any proceeduers in place for defecting and who analysis the depots tachographs is there any procedur for tachograph offences and who sorts it.

the vi will come down on the depot like a ton of bricks. they will rip the place apart .just hope you have no problems yourself

we have Four Lorries all 7.5t in our fleet, and there are nine in our sister companies fleet in the depot next door(4x18t(owned), and 5x7.5t(leased), neither depot has a TM, we basically run it ourselves, i handle the Routing, for our depot, and one of the other drivers handles the servicing thru Mercedes Charterway. The tacho’s are stored in the vacant depot managers office. we have no idea what is supposed to happen to them, we just put them into a drawer. Our Sister company depot has a manager, who hasn’t a clue about transport (his words!) and when i asked who was doing his routing and servicing schedules he answered…i have an agency lad doing it but he hasn’t a driving license so i can’t send him on the road! they just put all there tacho’s into a drawer in the bosses office, as we do.

with us we phone Merc at Hatfield when we have a defect, and they come down and sort it. no anaylsis takes place of the tacho’s. and none did when the depot had a manager to the best of my knowledge.

me personally, i have nothing i know that is illegal, i check all my own tacho’s each week, and hand them in as requested. i haven’t any knowledge of the CPC tests, but i have a good friend who is a CPC holder, and was once an owner operator (now owns his own Lorry francise business in Dartford) and he suggests the best thing that could happen is a visit…

to give you an idea of how the company run…i am taking my class two test in January (second week) i have passed my theory and paperwork stuff, they are paying for it, and we passed our only class two vehicle onto another depot in Exeter around four months ago, because we have no need for it the head office says!
weird!

Your mate is probably right…

Sounds like its tin 'at time :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Someone at your company is in for a very big shock I think.

i deliver Ceramic wall and floor tiles to building sites and trade outlets. and our sister company next door supply the same to public and private addresses. its mainly palletted, on euro’s, and is either cheque or account delivered…no cash is carried. the ‘O’ licence is Orange, and carries the name of “meyer specialists products” a firm that i have seen in our company portfolio, but our owners are Jewsons, the DIY guys, and all our defect sheets and charterway lease, servicing, tyre accounts, and windscreen cover is in the jewsons name.

I miss the Woolwich ferry.

Funny though ! I could never find the duty free shop.

Its only open 10pm/05.55am

My dealings with the V.I are usually that if there is a problem with a company they are running a depot without anyone in charge to oversee transport issues i.e service schedules, mot , tax , defects and tachograph anaylises namely a CPC holder that they will revoke the ‘O’ licence and call one of the company directors or transport manager in for a chat at the commisioners office and try to resolve the problems but they may revoke the licence if they find serious discrepancies with and form an opinion that the drivers are running to their own rules and with total disregard to the law. I work for a company delivering own account glass and we are a sattelite depot one of four the head office being based in Aberdeen, the point is our depot has a CPC holder who accepts responsibilitiy for the day to day running of this depot .

I can only hope you are correct with your own analysis because they can and will find discrepancies in tachographs however good you are

GOOD LUCK M8 you will need it !!!
