Vehicle hire using a Dutch/German Permit?

Hi Guys,

Can anyone please advise the position regarding hiring a UK registered truck for 2/3 weeks, but with either a Dutch/German International “O” Licence permit ?

And if no problem, under which section of the “O” Licensing regs would this be possible.

Many thanks

JJSL

I would say no as we cant put another eu reg unit on a uk o licence anymore

Had one involved in a accodent 3 year ago

Looked at hiring a dutch or german truck to get trailer moving
Problem i had insurance company wouldnt cover a foreign truck
Ended up bobtailing another one out from
Uk

(Was nr venlo so looked at both options)

I’ve done this in the past with both a Dutch and an Irish company. These were specialist bits of kit - low deck - which you can’t find here in the uk. Although not strictly correct in the eyes of the TC I took the position that as long as it was legal with the necessary paperwork and insurance I would crack on.

Put my own community authorisation in it and ran for months at a time with no problem.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

Thank you for the replies.

getting-on, I’m not looking to put the vehicle on a UK “O” Licence, I’m looking to hire a UK reg Vehicle from
a UK hire company and use a Dutch/German “O” Licence with a community authorisation permit, is this possible or not ?
when you run in Europe you must have a community authorisation permit which covers you for International work you
cannot run on a standard “O” Licence.

Plambert, this is the point I’m trying to find out about, because running in Europe you are on EU hours and Regs, so
these are the same for all EU counties doing International work, so, why can you not hire a vehicle in Italy with your english “O” Licence or vice a versa ?

I think the main problem might be the insurance aspect, because hiring a tractor unit you usually have to insure the
hire vehicle youself, ie put it on you fleet policy and because it’s a foreign reg number, the insurance company will not let you do this ?

Therefore, you cannot hire a vehicle over 3.5ton now without showing/having you “O” Licence/community authorisation with you, because if you get stopped by ? say VOSA they can impound the vehicle and the hire could lose the vehicle because they had not carried out the required checks to make sure you are authorised to operate the vehicle, and yes I know you can hire a 7.5 ton box vehicle for personal use ie your own house removal without an “O” Licence, but I would not like to get stopped and try and explain why I have a 40 ton outfit full of Tesco products and say I’m doing a personal removal !!!

Finally, if I could get the vehicle insured, would it be legal to use on a foreign operators licence for 2/3 weeks ?

JJSl, think I’d just ring the VOSA man and get an answer straight off. Personally, I think you’d be OK, but if it were me I’d ring.

Little different, but as regards the insurance, we had to pick up an American lowloader with kit built on it, up from the docks to a site and then take it back a few months later. Insurance just wanted to know a few details and that was it. I had all sorts of reservations, including type approval, rang VOSA and they had no problems with it and very helpful.

Sometimes the things you think are going to be complicated, are the least and vice versa.

Hi Albion,

Sometimes it’s to simple, Phone VOSA man, ha ha Thank You.

Best Regards

I know about eu authorisations as have a intl o licence

Prob i had was insurance co would not cover a non uk reg rental and persume
The same in the other way round

And where vosa wont allow you to put a foreign vehicle on to your uk licence
I would presume its an eu thing and be the same if try to put a gb on a dutch licence

If this was possible i would say the big dutch boys now with the levy would t be getting uk o licences and putting trucks on gb plates
