Here we go, didn’t think it would be very long before the perfecto drivers rolled in
Here we go, didn’t think it would be long before a gallant hero came rushing to aid the damsel in distress.
Smashing the n/s mirror off; fair enough. Carrying on without it; no excuse.
Yeah, cool init
I agree on your latter point but the OP is clearly a new starter, lessen learned, she’ll know for next time. All im trying to say is maybe a little slack wouldn’t go amiss this time.

You’ll be fine. A mirror is a damned site cheaper than an insurance claim between you and the car.
Due to the excesses imposed on most trucks and buses, if there’s minor damage (upto a grand) to another vehicle, it just gets paid out, so the mirror isn’t bad.
You’ll learn that when it’s really tight, just come to a complete stop, have a look, if you can maneuvre a bit further over, that’s fine, but if not, let the other person do the work and suffer any damage.
I especially do this if I’m going through a gap and someone decides to come through, I just stop, if they hit a stationary vehicle then they’re 100% to blame and it also gives that bit more predictability so you can go through that bit closer.
+1, don’t worry about the people behind, if its too tight just drive at a speed that you know you can stop when an ‘F1’ driver is coming the other way, if that’s 5mph- so be it & NEVER-NEVER put your wheels on the soft verge, its a lot easier to get a 1 ton car off the verge than a 44 ton truck & a lot cheaper.
Race Trucker:
As others have said - it happens. After the first close call or incident you stop worrying about stoping, taking your time and having a look.
It’s easy to feel under pressure and move a bit quick because your worrying about holding people up etc…
At least your ‘crunch’ was minor - no biggie! I also would head BTB with a mirror missing though - don’t risk another incident!
Depends which mirror really. But in reality, you can manage without - as she proved, you’ve just got to be that extra bit careful - PLUS back to base might’ve been as far as doing the drops on her way back
Yes was n/s mirror spoke to the boss after it happened and he rang back to say it couldnt get one til Monday lunchtime. I realise it was illegal to prob drive without but if I had got pulled would have explained it had just happened and was on route to get it fixed. Just took it steady for the rest of the day and used the rear camera alot
try explaining to the boss that you stopped for a break and a branch falls off a tree and smashes your N/s mirror…,
lucky i had another driver join me for coffee…

After a very long shift bringing a coach in from Spain, I thought ‘only another sixty seconds to go’ as I swung right to turn in through the yard gates. BANG !!! I whacked the nearside mirror off on the gate frame, making such a clang like a bomb had gone off that the second driver leapt from the courier seat, and the office staff came tumbling out the door to see what had happened?
S**t happens even in the last minute of the wheels turning !

you were very lucky that you broke the mirror because if you hadn’t you would presumably have continued with the turn and taken the whole side out of the coach
I often whacked the bus mirrors off in the bus wash, we had a box of mirrors at the end of the wash and just slid another mirror onto the mount when out the wash, they where all plastic lenses
A slight advantage of a bus is you can lean forward to look out of all the windows down the near side
