Vehicle checkpoint

Was driving a rigid along the A556 on the outskirts of Manchester (between the M6 and M56) today and there’s a permanent HGV(?) checkpoint. The lights were flashing on the sign saying HGVs must be in lane one and there were three artics stopped in the the deceleration lane.

Was I meant to stop?!

There didn’t seem to be any officials asking me to stop. I just assumed if they wanted me to stop someone would signal me to do so. Not really sure what the procedure is.

There will be a bloke in a hi viz waving you in if they want you. They farm everyone to lane one, then pull over 2 or 3 that they fancy, then they are ■■■■■■■ with those for a while. Don’t offer yourself to them!

I figured as much. Cheers!

I tend to avoid using the A556 if I can. Only costs 5 minutes to go to the M56/M6 interchange instead.

I read on the HA website last night that work starts this year to make it the A556M so maybe it will be removed entirely.
