vehicle check

can some one tell me how long the vehicle checks should be
at the start of a shift.

some drivers say 10 min is this right

10 to 15 mins seems about right but if you have he same truck every day then it way well be a lot less as a good driver will keep a constant check on their usual vehicle throughout the day/week and anything that feels ‘funny’ from the normal running of that vehicle will get picked up more easily.

Untill they are all completed in my book. No time limit.

we were paid 30 minutes extra in a morning and evening at one job, this was to check load security and the vehicles. I would say the norm is 15 minutes though, 5 minutes wandering round with a cup of coffee and the rest checking in the cab, documents ect

If I have just taken over the vehicle after someone else has been using it 10 - 15 minutes I suppose, although that depends if it is just the unit or unit and trailer. If I am starting again after driving the thing the previous shift and then taken a daily rest in it then just a few minutes - lights okay, tyres not flat, good to go.

Have seen some drivers do their checks whilst sat in the office!!! :open_mouth:

Is it stipulated anywhere that you must put your chart or card in before you do your checks ?

No BUT the time spent doing those checks MUST be put on the chart or card as it is other work

Bit pointless not to put it in first…

It’s not pointless at all…if I defect the vehicle, find it unroadworthy,or it is allocated at the last minute to someone else then I would have wasted my time by putting a chart in because I would’nt be driving it.

Swings and roundabouts — you would still need to input the time spent on the vehicle you did not take out …

A bit pointless not to though when Ms Bell wants you to explain why you have created a false record. She will have you in her adult correction chamber…

Why would have a false record been created ? When I finally settle on a vehicle to drive, checks for all other vehicles can be recorded as “Other Work” on its chart.

Which is fine - no false record from what I can see…

It’s your choice as to whether you insert to record the other work prior to driving or manually add that data. As long as it gets recorded then VOSA will be happy.

I agree with that as well, though I still don’t see the point, or the time saving.

When I worked for Securitas it wasn’t unusual to have to defect one vehicle, have another reallocated to someone else whose vehicle wouldn’t start and finally end up in a third. In fact ,that happens to someone almost every day there, so I soon learnt only to put the chart in when I was ready to roll.

Sounds like they need to look at their maintenance provider or VOSA do :stuck_out_tongue:

Funny thing about driving Cash in Transit vehicles, you can park where ever you want,go pretty much anywhere you want, get waved through spot checks because it’s too much hassle for Vosa to check you because you would have to be escorted back to a police station. You’re pretty much immune to anything.

Slightly off topic but VOSA have just had a major crackdown on Taxis & private hire cars in Derby. They just parked them up and made the punters walk or get a roadworthy taxi. lots of Muhammed and Abdul’s were in court for various offences according to the paper
