Shopping on Sunday, I got s bag of stir fry veggies, containing carrot, onion, cabbage and be an sprouts. Just cooked it with a satay sauce and had a delicious meal. Then noticed the use-by date of 29th September , and a notice stating do not exceed the use-by date.
So my question is, what on earth is there about these four veg that makes them so dodgy after a couple of days?
If you’re parked in south mimms tonight and hear a door slam followed by rapidly running footsteps, it might be me!
In that veg pack, it is the bean sprouts that go off quickly and really should be dumped before cooking I’ve always found my nose to be the best indicator, if it don’t smell right ditch it and ok I’ve got it wrong a couple of times, but not that many, it’s the fresh stuff, meat, fish & bread that needs to be kept an eye on but usually it is safe for a few days after the ‘best by’ date if kept safely until used, again the nose will give the game away
Cheers, I wondered if it was the beansprouts - it was a use by rather than a best before date which puzzled me. Suffice to say, no ill effects from eating it, other than the usual effects of a diet rich in veg!
I ate a yoghurt the other week that was a fortnight past it’s best before. Didn’t realise til after. How would you tell that a yoghurt is past it’s best anyway, when it’s already just milk that’s gone off?
dates, right IMHO don’t even bother to look at them, you have a nose, you have eyes, you have a tongue, taste it if you think it is not right don’t eat it. Mind you be careful with veg and salad as they can cause problrms
