VAT

i’m not sure if this is in the right place but…

can companies charge you VAT on delivery charges?

all companies i have dealt with, both privately and proffesionally have never done this but is it legal?

does anybody know

Yes I believe it’s legal to charge VAT on delivery.
My understanding of this is that if VAT is paid on the goods then any delivery charge will also incur a VAT payment.

If the company is VAT regestered then there is (and should be) VAT on deliveries whatever they are. If the company is not registered then VAT is not included at all.

Trust me, I’m not an accountant (but my other half is)

Delivery charges aren’t exempt from VAT so if a company is VAT registered it has to by law include VAT in with what they charge. In theory said VAT should also be itemised on the invoice/receipt as per standard VAT invoice requirements.
