VAT free Driver cpc

There are many things that are VAT exempt. Childrens clothes, Fresh fruit and veg.
And as far as i can work out, You shouldn’t be charged VAT for your Dcpc, ADR or maybe even your lessons to drive a lorry.

Education, vocational training and other connected services provided by an eligible body “like” a school, college or university are exempt from VAT.
Check the link about a third way down the page.

Phil,

The info in your post is correct, and I know there are colleges that offer the courses that you’ve mentioned.

AFAIK, some of the colleges in the North-West offer some DCPC, such as Manchester College, Wigan and Leigh College and St Helens College.

The DCPC isn’t provided by a school or college though, it’s generally provided by private training companies. Therefore VAT is applicable.

the legislation says “Like” a school, college etc. then if you delve a bit further it goes into more detail and it appears any training by an approved or competent provider (something like that).

Derf,

Maybe that’s true in your part of the country (I don’t know one way or the other,) but I’ve named three North-West colleges above that offer DCPC.

I know that this is true, because I’m a freelance and I teach for one of them when they put on an ADR course that qualifies for DCPC.

You’re right about it normally being done by private training companies though, and I agree that it’s the norm because by far the vast majority of my work comes from private training providers.

Dieseldave. What’s the going rate for ADR packages and tanks training?
I’ve had a fairly reasonable quote, But the travelling isn’t too easy every day.
I would have used redrose at preston, but they’ve moved to bolton.
I’m determined to get it done within the next couple of months.

Phil,

I’d say that you don’t want to be paying any more than about £550, but I’d recommend that you give the tanks module a miss if there’s no realistic prospect of you driving a tanker, or tank container, because that’ll normally take about £100 off your training bill.

It also worth considering that a cheaper course might prove to be more expensive if you have to travel quite far to it each day. If providers follow the normal timetable, you’re looking at four round trips if you leave out the tanker module. If you insist on the tanker module, then it’ll be five round trips. In terms of exam fees, you’ll ALSO save an extra £20 if you leave out the tanks module.

I think you’re in the Blackpool area??

If you say roughly whereabouts you are and give your daily max travelling distance one way, I’ll give you some contact details of ADR providers within range.

For instance, would you be prepared to go to Accrington or Wigan?

I’m near Cleveleys. I’ll take your advice and miss out the tanker module, a mate of mine has had his for years and never used it. The firms that have been offering work don’t have tankers, I can always add it on later.
Accrington or wigan shouldn’t be a problem. I’m trying to use somewhere on the train network. Her indoors likes to have the car 24/7 so she can travel 1 mile to work in the morning. I’ve had her a while now, She’s like one of the family.

I didn’t pay VAT on my DCPC training as the company was not VAT registered.

Hi truckerjim,

That’s a very fair point

One of the providers I work for managed to keep the training turnover below the threshold for needing to register for VAT, cos he used a different name for the consultancy part of his business.

That was the position for about 10yrs, but he ended up having to register the training name for VAT in the end. :frowning:

Phil have you seen the price of train fares lately? Going up again in January I think too. It might be cheaper to drive and have the Mrs take a taxi to work? 1 mile■■? Walk!!!

I know that, You know that. But taking her car? It’s just not worth it.

Where I did my DCPC training in S.Yorks - they are private training provider BUT also registered as a charity in educational sector = VAT exempt. They also do ADR inc. Tankers for £550 all in, no add-ons (except £60.00 extra if you want 21 hours DCPC whilst attending ADR - optional). All courses include lunch too!!!

If anyone wants details PM me.

Tameside College (near Manchester) don’t charge V.A.T on their Mercedes backed DCPC courses.

£90 for 7 hours. I’d prefer to claim the VAT on a £40 course.
Where do they dream up these prices?

And it’s that course that gave incorrect information too, so £90 for incorrect information??

Phil,
That’s correct… a tanker module can be added to an existing ADR card at any time you like, and you’re not tied to going to the same provider for it either.

PM sent.

cheers.

He’d certainly be 1 of the more interesting people you’ve ever had on a course eh Dave? :grimacing:
