Van insurance.

Basically I have bought a van for work and am now looking at insurance quotes. Unfortunately as alot on here will know I employed a driver a few months ago who decided to have a week of carnage culminating in 3 claims against my business policy.

As the truck policy is in my name they are now holding this against me, the policy holder, when trying to get van insurance. The van ive bought was £600 and cheapest quote I’ve had for insuring it is £750!!
Does anyone know of a way around this as I haven’t personally had any accidents and dont see why I should be penalised for a previous employees actions.

Thanks in advance
Matt.

Do you have any car ncb? I just insured my van for personal use and commuting and used my car Ncb, i pay £312 fully comp for a 2012 transit connect with Gladiator

Yeah I do have ncb on my car but then when I come to insure my car ill have to declare all these claims as its in my name. Cant believe im being penalised cos of that git!

Matt.

are you ltd? the previous claims are in your company which shouldnt affect your private motor insurance, if your a sole trader then it might be a different matter, someone did a hit and run on me and i had to claim £4.5k on my truck insurance but my private car insurance wasnt interested at renewal time

Yep ltd company and I put my details in comparison websites obviously with no claims in last 5 yrs but when I clicked on lowest quote they rang me and said that either my name or address is showing 3 claims in July and these must be disclosed on personal policies. I just don’t know what to try next.
Matt.

you then reply that no they bloody well dont as you are only a director of that company and not even the driver at the time. thats the whole point of a ltd company, its separate to your home life.

why dont you put the van on your business policy anyway?

I did say thats the reason of a limited company but they were insistent it should go against me. Im not keen on putting it on commercial policy as a smash in the van would put my wagon insurance up.

Exactly the reason i keep it seperate , forgot the comparison sites, ring one of the specialist van insures and speak to them direct, i use Gladiator, cant fault them

Are you married? Can you get wife or girlfriend to insure the van and have you as a named driver on it? Just a thought - don’t know if it helps any…

£750pa! Wow thats cheap, mines £5kpa ! With full eu £250k daily cover £10million with a call & small premium.

I spent a WK on phone to pay that little, 1st few quotes were £10k area.

I’d give a nad to pay £750.

I tried gladiator as you suggested and they said they would have to include the claims from the business policy on my personal policy.

You are still legally bound to disclose any claims you have made even if if you are only a named driver.

I dont think £750 is cheap for third party fire and theft cover. It is a £600 van doing about 10 miles per week going backwards and forwards to my yard. No deliveries are made with the van.

Anyway I eventually found a quote of £649 so I rang insurers just to confirm everything was in order and explain about these claims against me. Thankfully they saw sense and said they looked at the drivers history, not including claims on other policies. Price dropped down to £407 so I snapped their hand off and will remember to call them when car insurance is due next year.

For how many vans 250 daily git what are you moving gold■■? I paid 1200 for similar cover are you sure its not 25k git the 250k is usually per tonneand is your cmr cover

Mines 950 this year but I’m on a light haulage policy with a small van.

Did you try bollingtons for your van cover or if its mainly same day then cornish

i still cant get my head round the fact they are holding the business claims against you personally, as a ltd co you are just an employee, its like a firm having 3 drivers and the other 2 cant get cheap insurance because the 3rd one keeps crashing.

When they asked if you had any previous claims surely you said no because you havent, the business has but you havent, is it just me ?

They said because I was director of my business which has had claims then they musy take them into consideration. Crazy I know but it wasn’t just 1 insurer. Spoke to about 5 or 6 insurers over the phone and they all said same. Luckily ive found one that talks sense and they will get my business for a few years now!

Insurance companies are leeches! We cant drive / operate without them by law and don’t they know it!! :smiling_imp: They make there own rules up because they can, then, if the rules seem to turn in favour of the customer, they change them, because they can. Premiums always seem to go up regardless of how faultless YOU may drive. Any slightest deviation from what they would describe as “normal” seemingly automatically attracts a premium increase. This I year I bought a Porsche with a view to selling it on in the summer. I also own a 1998 diesel Range Rover worth about a couple of grand. My 16 year old diesel Range Rover cost MORE to insure for a year than a 2005 model Porsche!!   …work that one out! When I asked why and how it worked out like that, the response was “well that’s what the computer says”!! :unamused:

AND…the biggest con of all, you can only apply your no claims bonus to ONE vehicle!! Whats all that about? Yes I know that SOME companies affect what they call a “mirrored NCB” but that is not the point. You have earned the NCB by your careful driving and you can only drive one vehicle at a time that is why the NCB should be for YOU the driver and not attached to a vehicle!
