V.W. Tractor unit

Am i going mad, since when did V.W. start building trucks.
A1(m) going north around the Wetherby area yesterday afternoon a silver VW tractor unit pulling a tautliner :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Well, actually VW own Scania- or at least they are the largest shareholder- but I suspect the tractor unit you saw just had a badge from a VW van plonked on the front for a laugh.

someone I know in brum, has a crewcab volkwagon unit, about the same size as a transit, what tows a 30ft trailer, he uses it to tour motorcycle events selling merchandise such as t-shirts, the awning builds onto it to make his stall http://www.ls4b.co.uk/

Ive been looking round the net for a picture but not found anything as yet. It wasnt a unit that you would recognise which is why I had to look twice when i saw it .

Apparently its called the constellation(sp). I dont know how to do pictures but it can be found on wikipedia

Aren’t they rebranded Iveco’s ? from South America

Cheers Dave

no its a own brand from the south american part of VW and it looks nice

but it is built for the roads and traffic from that land so it wil require a
few changes before being a winner over here perhaps,

Some info of these Volkswagen Constellation trucks was found from Wikipedia. Check out these links:

Couple of links for those skilled in foreign languages (or in use of Babelfish):
First, second and third link.

Some technical information can be found from this Brasilian site by choosing ā€œProdutosā€ → ā€œConstellationā€ and then appropiate model.

Edit:
I wandered little more in the web and found couple pages written in a little more comprehensible language  Some generic info about this model range and some info about the engines.

For those who don’t want to browse all these pages short summary is that top of the model range truck is 4x2 tractor unit equipped with 8.3 liter and 320hp (1300Nm) ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  and that enermous amount of power is then transferred to 16 speed ZF gearbox. That truck is apparently rated to pulling semi with GVW is 45 tonnes. You would immediately swop your R620 into this if possible, wouldn’t you   I’m also quite sure some ā€œold handsā€ will now came to boast that when they were lads… :stuck_out_tongue:

That’ll be a mini artic, you can also get Iveco Daily’s and Sprinters with a 5th wheel. they’re classed as a C1+E vehicle.

MAN also built a range of 7.5t ish trucks in the 80’s using the old VW LT cabs.

The constelation does apear to be their own cab. They make ā– ā– ā– ā–  fine vans and cars so i cant see there being much wrong with their trucks.

I had only seen images of older trucks, and seemed to think that they looked a bit Ivecoish.

Here a couple of pictures that I just found, but my memory is playing tricks as they don’t actually look like Iveco’s

Don’t VW own MAN? or the biggest part of ?

Don’t VW own MAN? or the biggest part of ?

Nope. But they do as already said own about 40% of Scania, if the MAN/Scania buyout goes ahead then VW will ā€˜then’ own a large percentage of MAN.

Top one looks like an old Merc cab.

What a fantastic looking lorry, and to be honest i want one but theres just one thing i find pretty bad about it, thats got to be the smallest windscreen i have seen in a long long time.

Have you seen the American forces whute Freightliner cabover that pulls an American box trailer? That has got a ridiculously short screen.
