I had a ‘T’ reg Scania this last week for one day, over a million KM`s on it, was a bit slow on the uptake fully freighted, but the gearbox and the clutch were an absolute dream to use, far better than all the modern stuff And it made it easier to use on the Fen roads!
There’s a company called Haslam Commercial Services who used to do our servicing, and when the truck was in for service, we got a courtesy truck that is known in the area as Big Haz.
It’s a bloody old ERF about a P reg if I remember correctly, and not a bad drive actually to be honest, although VERY basic.
Oh, and it’s still going.
When on coaches, I worked for a company called Pioneer in Rochdale, and we had an old A reg Leyland Lynx for school runs, it had the semi auto box and no limiter so 70mph wasn’t a prob (except on hills of course), got pulled off a copper in it once for ‘speeding’, he was convinced we could only legally do 62mph highway code and a few ■■■■ take comments and I was on my way again at 70mph
Breifly drove an '02 plate ERF that crunched into every gearbox, 8sp box with 7th giving a top speed of 25mph. Everything about it was knackered, seat wouldn’t adjust properly. Had a bad back after ONE day. Tyres were suspect low on tread but no one at the company gave a [zb] and the crane on the back had worn connections for on-the-back operating. The ground controls were OK. 800,000 kms on the clock! Builders merchant wagon and a pig to drive. Later found out none of the other drivers would touch it. Thankfully the company decided I wasn’t for them and so never went back, which is not only a godsend for me but a proof that I should stay out of B/M side of driving
Then again, I’ve driven an A reg ERF that had about 8 gears but was used for carrying machinery. 18t or maybe a 17t, but carried a FastTrac with more straps and chains than I have seen before. Then we strapped on some more gear and at the weighbridge it weight 16t. Boss strapped it with my help and guided me.
It could do 60 fully loaded That was the boss driving it down to Bristol, then he hopped into another truck, a Volvo and I took the truck down to Cornwall, dropped the load and brought it empty back to the Midlands. Parked up as instructed and registered mailed the keys back to him, and all was well. But it drove really well, cruise control would have been nice
800,000km blimey that’s just run in.
we’re still looking after some with getting on for 2 million k’s.
i believe there is a man tga we look after with 1.2 million k’s on and that MUST be some kind of record.
Our workshop still use a ‘S’ reg Volvo FM for taking trailers to MOT and with the lowloader trailer on recovery work (our own vehicles only).
Inside is a typical workshop motor, grease and tools everywhere, but it dont half go like stink. its a 380 originally but chipped up to around the 440 mark…ish
