Using Two-Way Radios in Lorry

Some may remember the Time no one was without CB Radio on the Way.
Time changed, and CB Radio in a Lorry of tesco,ASDA or other Big Firm is out of Discussion.
But how is it with ordinary Two-Way Radios you carry in Your Pocket

Some can still fit a Box in there Lorry,if Company gives Permission.

What You think?

Two baked bean cans with string worked for us kids in the late 1950’s!

I had the misfortune to drive a lorry with a two way radio fitted this summer. Didn’t think anyone still used those, but they do. Think they a pain in the ■■■■ to use, as apart from poor sound quality, you also have to take your eyes off the road to take it from its holder and again to replace it. Same danger as a hand held phone, yet they remain legal to use?

But some Fun when parked up at an RDC,Service Station,Calais or Traffic Jam.

Those PMR radios you highlighted are ok but I wouldn’t buy them as their ranges is bad, and I doubt they’ll work over the proclaimed 12km, more like 1km or less in urban areas due to their low power.
I use imported Puxing 888 UHF PMR radios while riding my motorbike with a group of mates. These also have up to 5w of power so their range is greater, but they may interrupt other receivers.
The additional benefits of the Puxing’s are that they are programmable (for both public & business channels) and you can attach them to an external antenna via an sma connector for greater reception/transmission. Something most PMR radios can’t (shouldn’t) do.
As they can use business channels I’ve been able to listen to the chatter at RDCs and have a little fun playing pranks on the RDC staff/shunters via the radio.
Mine also have an inbuilt FM radio & the ability to power & charge via the ciggy socket

Be careful only to get the UHF radios, as they also come in VHF and dual band.
The VHF are used for marine comms, and the dual band tend to be limited to their programmability

I was on a cruise a couple of years ago and there were two families that had the bloody things. Settle down for an afternoon nap and it’s “Maaarttyyy… Come in Maaarty” in the best Noo Yawk accent. All over the ship, the kids either couldn’t, or more likely didn’t want to, answer, so Mommy just keeps calling, louder and louder, until the radio becomes irrelevant as we can hear her all over the ship.

The crew asked her to stop and it got a bit better but then we got it on shore too. Strolling down the sea front in Alexandria… “Maaartyyyy…” FFS.

You’ll be lucky to get 2k+ as there are many limiting factors, line of sight, across terrain etc will limit the range. Legal UK PMR446 radios are also limited by their power output. The aerials have to be fixed so you can’t modify them to fit and external antenna (though it is possible to fit an sma connector to bypass this restriction  ). They will only have a limited number of channels that can’t be reprogrammed so you’ll hear loads of people shouting Maaaarty! on overcrowded channels (have at least double the number of channels to get around this). Also remember they work best if you hold them vertical, as the transmission will radiate straight outwards giving greater range.

Will use it when in South-West USA.
Many do Rock climing and i do Hiking. But for a free Ride i need to bring often anything they need.
Till now i had to wait around if they need more Rope or Proviant,or whatever. With Radio i will have more freedom.

Sierra Nevada ? sounds fantastic, but wandering about doing all the 10 4 big buddy, bear in the air looking for beaver with rubber duck will detract from the solitude of the occasion ?

Maybe next Time around Bishop. Buttermilk Mountains.
Perhaps a walk to the Bristlecone Pines.

The 3rd one in the op’s post is only to be used by licenced operators as it is certainly useable on the 2m ham bands.
