Here is a blast from the past for the new drivers today.
The French authorities accepted driving to the restaurant or shop to buy food in your unit.
You have done a full day’s driving and book off to end the shift, you would then drop your trailer and use the unit as a taxi.
Some drivers would go to the beach.
How it worked with the tachograph is beyond me.
I would write on the back of the analogue chart that I was looking for a shower or a hot meal, no fine, as the French take their food very seriously.
Lets say you were due a weekly rest period of a day or two days, your driving and duty time is ending but you are in the middle of nowhere with no facilities to eat or wash, the nearest town is 10 kms away.
You stay where are, by a field with only cows or goats for company or pull the fuse and wire it to civilization.
We are talking the 80s and 90s, so do not try this now, they do not accept " coffee money" now.
Wasnt only abroad , i used to regularly do this in the Uk and it was never questioned (late 80,s and through the 90,s)
remember when we were working 10 to 12 Day every Week?
What happens if you are an owner driver and dont have a car, what would be wrong with shopping or socialising in the unit after “hours”.
I still do it,no way will I park somewhere I don’t want to.
If iv got my food etc with me it doesn’t matter but if I need food I go get it simple.

And me, that was before the tacho rules became zero tolerance.
In the 80s a few minutes over your time wasn’t taken as seriously or looked upon as it is now, that is being on the same crime level as armed robbery or beating up an old lady. I exaggerate but you know what I mean.
Good memories of not clearing Customs in Alverca Tir park, drop trailer, then bob tail down to Cascais or Estoril beach, see a few films in English with Pork and cheese subtitles.
In Porto, hang out at the Atlantico cafe on the beach.
My old man worked for a bus company and regularly brought it home evenings & weekends, I’ve fond memories of popping to the shops , round grannies or out for the day in it when he wasn’t working …don’t think it would happen these days…
I saw one, a blue Volvo I think - no idea what firm, etc, on the car park at Waitrose in Market Harborough a few months ago, so it does still go on.

Nothing but it would still be under EU regs if over a plated GVW of 7.5 tonnes because the exception for private use is a max of GVW 7500
Those were the days , I remember them well.
Drop the trailer , Bob-tail it off & go in search >>>>>>… such fun
Still no problem over here. 75km per day allowance for personal use that doesn’t go towards driving/working time.
so is it the law or just a company policy and you don’t write it into your log?

Its allowed by law and written in the log book in a special section.
When I was done for being to keen
my rest day potters weren’t counted
I used to have a card in every day too
show what was happening.
8 and 11 continuous days were showing
in the end that counted

Yep used to do this all the time back then, 1 job I was on, we worked out off a warehouse on an industrial estate, and in the evening 3-4 off us would hop in 1 Unit and bob tail over to the town to a regular café we used, the guy driving would just put a new card in, record it as private use(maybe add trip to café) on the back off the card, and keep it with his records. It was only about a 4 mile round trip, but in those days the Ministry seemed quite relaxed about it. I know this because I’ve shown cards with this on to Ministry men, and they were without exemption happy to see recorded private use, as opposed too missing mileage
These days you’d probably get done for driving over hours, and for carrying passengers without seat belts, that’s progress for you
This thread answers my question, I’ve seen loads of units running bob tail today and wondering why?
It must be the trampers Christmas shopping day
