just reading truckboys post on cutting in, and there was another recent one i saw that mentioned using slips
whats everyones thoughts, is it right if your in a line of slow traffic to skip up and down the slip road to get further on ■■
i ask because there’s one on the A454 new road approaching M6 J10 from wolves where it regularly backs up. if its busy i will often shoot up the slip road - i then have the option of going round bentley mill and up to J10 from another way, but if its clear other side (as often it is) i just run back down the other side

…thus creating an unnecessary “spanner” in the flow of the traffic, which now has to slow down or move into lane 2 to let you rejoin, just to save a few seconds. When will you SWAs learn to use the brains you were born with?
Steering Wheel Attendent, ie. have piece of paper that says they’ve been able to drive a wagon round a few local roads and can also reverse it round a couple of carefully placed cones, but don’t know how to drive professionally yet.

but if you read it, you’d see what i said,
this junction often backs up just at the off ramp and under the island but its CLEAR on the other side
dipstick
So if that’s the case then why do you bother sitting in the backed up traffic to get off and then come back up the other side when the motorway is flowing fine?
oh, and just for the record, i did my first bit of reversing round cones and driving on local roads in 1977 in a double decker bus with a crash box
and from 1979 to 1987 i was doing 2 runs a week on the coaches from the midlands to the south of france and spain ( at 4000 miles a week)
from 1987 to 2000 i was doing 2000m a week on boxes - the last 3 in my own wagon - i gave it up for health reasons and cos i was sick of numpties on the job
at a rough estimate on the cautious side its over 2 million miles
safety record :- accidents NIL
broken mirrors a few
dont be so quick to label people matey, especially when you know nowt about them
someone left one of our merc / van hool double deckers parked up in the yard and had backed it in its slot but left it sticking out about 8ft. As our boss was very particular about this kind of thing i though i’d be professional and put it in line. didn’t realise the works minivan was behind it
I used to duck n dive when I had my own truck but if I am on an hourly rate I just choose my lane & sit. I dont get mad at the guys that jump slip roads. they might be freeing up the road for people behind them that need to exit. When all the gnashing & froth is over you will find that they have arrived at the next MSA just a few minutes before you. We have all gone thru a Hurry-Hurry phase. Given time,it wears off. ( Especially in UK )
IMHO if you decide to leave the flow of traffic and go down the off ramp with the sole intention of comming back up the on ramp to gain what is only a few seconds or places in the queue, you deserve NOT to be shown curtisy(?) by fellow drivers and be allowed the chance by a fellow driver (who has sat in the queue) dropping back to allow you in, you have shown ignorance and arrogance towards other road users, you deserve to be made to wait and not allowed to filter back in, going against my professional style I will go out of my way not to allow/show someone whom I have witnessed exiting the road, with the sole intention of rejoining, the same manners as I would a fellow driver who has sat in the same queue as me without taking a quick duck and dive
I used to witness this last year northbound in the roadworks on the A1 at newark, (muskham), 1 SWA in front of me, dropped off the road only to find themselves re-joining behind me, this 1 issue that really annoys me this action by duckers/divers only makes the queue of traffice worse by slowing thing down
I would not leave with the intention of rejoining immeadiately, BUT if the situation changed and I could see from the top that the traffic was moving freely I would change my plans… … …
Surely if you can exit the queue and find another route then you are reducung the queue for other people behind. If you get to the top of the slip and find the way is clear then logic says you take that route.
I think it was my post last Saturday about the overturned truck on the M6 where I mentioned I took the sliproad (how else do you exit a Motorway? ) to divert to the normal roads and received some rather nasty venom from a certain RobK who seemed to take exception to this.
The point I was making (and it would appear it got misconstrued by RobK as I was using the sliproad to gain a few places in the traffic) is that rather than sit in a queue on the motorway I will divert off and find a way around the blockage. It may take longer or may save time, but I would far sooner keep moving than get bored sitting in a traffic queue. I spent 9 hours in a jam on the M1 once and do not wish that to happen again.
As it happened on this particular incident I reached the top of the slip and could see that the blockage was close so I rejoined the motorway, incidentally in a similar place to the one I left and soon got past the blockage.
A short time later everybody had to take the sliproad and find a way round as the M6 was closed to allow recovery of the truck.
Its a good idea to use the slip roads as often as possible, especially in this ountry as it is every man for himslef on the roads, sp you NEED to take any shortcuts you can and ■■■■ anyone else.

yep
did something similar at doncaster, went on the outside lane approaching a roundabout went fully round and merged back in.
I must agree that i tried it once…only problem was …it didnt re-join the motorway …ended up miles from where i wanted to be…so i just dont do it anymore…but i dont blame anyone for trying …as rob says…its a waste of time and energy…you only free up space behind you …and create it once again when you re-join…so as i`m on salary…i stick with the traffic…typical eg was last week …took me 8 hours to get to haydock…and 9 hours from wigan to dagenham the next day…i didnt mind sitting in all that traffic with air-con…but might have been different without it…
The problem is with is is that you create massive tail backs further back, the first vehicles start teddy bear braking, the vehicles behind then brake harder and the following vehicles then have to stop. But it’s alright Jack, because you are alright
You only have to look at what happens when a car has a puncture, or a truck breaks down, there are 3 lanes of massive queues within minutes.
By going up the slip road you havent saved anyone anything, but by re-emerging onto the same road you will cause them to slow up to let you in.
