i use my iphone as a wifi hotspot as i am on orange with unlimited data, i use an app called Pdanet to link my laptop to my phone, but i have jailbroke my iphone, im not sure if it will work with an unbroken iphone

Latest software version has the wifi hotspot option as standard now mate. So works without jailbreak.
Phone wired to the lappy, unlimited data = //inner.

I got a 3 portable WiFi hotspot recently, much faster than the dongles I’ve found. Get up to 4mb/s at most places and brilliant reception.HTC phones do that, create a hotspot for your wifi to connect to.
HTC Desire, Personnel Hotspot and a £10 P/M GiffGaff Sim card with unlimited Data.

Three wont let you use the personal hotspot on the iphone if you have the PAYG unlimited data add on, they only let you use the personal hotspot if you pay an extra £10 a month and sign up for the One plan.
Also in the USA, AT&T are upgrading people to more expensive data plans if they tether there phones to there PC’s, they have software to tell whether it is a phone using the data or a pc. Pdanet has a ‘Hide Usuage’ feature which supposedly fools the Network operator into thinking that you are using the internet on your phone and not via a PC, I use it on my Three phone with the PAYG unlimted data addon and have not had any problems.
You don’t have to go to the expense of an i phone. £99.95 gets you a HTC Wildfire on 3 with built in WiFi hotspot and then just £15 on PAYG gets you unlimited data and loads of calls and texts. Cheapest solution i have found by far.
I have a blackberry on vodafone and wanted to use it as a modem but they charge for tethering. I did read somewhere that all the networks are soon going to charge for tethering as they are losing out big time.
Mine works fine, but you can also take the sim card out and put it in the 3 dongle and that works o.k. as well.

Just checked the T&C’s for o2 and they definitely charge, if others don’t yet you can bet they will do very soon!
Get yourself a decent wifi ariel,and software ,and never pay for internet again,i go abroad alot and i use mine to pick up signals up to 10km away!.the software helps you get into “other” wifi hotspots free.

What aerial and software is that then ?. Never seen anything work at that distance, you must see thousands of networks in a 10km radius. How do you know which ones you can connect to ?.
Like many post before I too use a 3 Dongle the 3 network seems to have come on leaps and bounds in last couple of years use it every day been up in Buckie and down in Redruth in last couple of weeks and works just fine no problems its £17.99 a month for 15 Gig allowance its a couple of pounds dearer than the ordinary dongle a month as its the latest HSPA+ dongle with new technology included for future changes to 3 network later this year never gone anywhere close to full usage

The feature is not network dependent.
They can’t stop you, but under the T&C (of the network you are using) there may be a charge, and through using the tethering you will have by defult agreed to the extra charges. if PAYG you might find your credit dissapearing very quickly and even worse if you are an acccount holder you could receive a very hefty bill at the end of the month as data rates can be very high if used in a way that is not autherised

If orange/O2 are doing that then they are breaking the terms and conditions set by Apple.
They are not allowed to modify any part of the iPhone operating System to do the things you stated!!
Just jailbreak then you can use it free anyway.
Just checked it on my Orange iPhone 4 and it says “To enable this on your account please contact Orange”
I have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G but not interested in doing it to my 4, caused me no end of hassle when I needed to get it repaired! Did save me a fortune in apps though!
