no not in general - only if you have to write on the back of printout for what ever reason and if you do need a printout you must keep it for 28 days then hand in like your paper charts. I may be wrong, no doubt the tacho police will put me in my place

Only for your own record I would think.
My son has had a bollocking for wasting paper by his firm!
As an agency driver, driving a different truck every time I go out,I put in my own paper roll for each journey just to make a printout for my own records. As far as I know there is no legal requirement to do so,but if there is any query sometime in the future,it’s always nice to have your own records to check back on.
Our vehicles are a mix of analogue and digi tachos,so there’s no knowing what truck I will have from one day to another.
Our agency office originally asked for printouts as they have no card reader. However the firm said there is no need for a printput from the agency, the transport office download the card into a file for agency drivers.
I get my card downloaded weekly.
If your traffic office or VOSA want to check your activities, they can download the info from your card themselves.
but i think there is a requirement to have a roll of paper in it
And also i believe to have a spare roll. Is’nt it an offence if you cant do a print out when asked?.
thats what i thought
As far as I know I know if you are driving a truck with a digital tacho all the time there is no need to keep a printout. If you drive digital and the old analogue you should keep a printout with your tacho,s and hand them in after the 4 week period. I used to enjoy this job when it was simple!
if you drive a mixture of digi and paper trucks for the same company lets say. you do not need to do prinouts after every trip as all the data is kept on the card. so when vosa tug you they just download your card and check your paper charts if you have any.
you only need todo a printout if you have to write on the back to explain why you didnt follow the rules, say you went over your hours you do a printout when it hapens and write on the back why e.g. accident etc etc.
not sure about agencys thought, yes the machine has to have paper in in but im not sure about the legal requirment to keep extra rolls in your truck etc no doubt somone else can clear that one up.
I thought the truck had to have a roll in the tacho, and 2 spare kept in the truck.
I carry 1 spare roll in my bag, just in case one runs out on a job, as I wont go through another drivers cuppboards to find one…

I thought that the rule was that the driver or an official must be able to do a print out if required - nothing more than that - could be wrong…

because surely wheel tappers just put their control card in and download data then plug it into their laptop at the roadside and look at the data? where do you end on how many rolls you need to carry? what if wheel tapper wants to print out a whole years worth and you only got 2 rolls of papper
will you be hauled in for a 9am meeting the next day with limeyphils ‘borderline boiler’
The only requirement is .there is Sufficient paper to print out.
In the Ideal world you would have a spare roll with you.
There is NO legal requirement to carry spare rolls as said you only need Sufficient paper.
The regs are a bit of an arse on this… The letter of the law is that the driver must
‘carry sufficient supplies of type approved print roll on board the vehicle so that a printout can be produced at an enforcement officers request’
However they also say the driver must
‘be able to produce at the roadside charts and any legally required manual records for the current day and the previous 28 calendar days’
Which basically means if you do a lot of stop starting you will use loads of paper to print out and probably need more than one roll!
We make our drivers carry a spare roll at all times… I cant find anything where it says this is actually the law, but I guess you could be prosecuted for not having enough to print out what is required.
So far as print outs per day go, this is a waste of paper as its not used for anything unless you need to check your own hours, or as has been said record a reason for an infringement!
I’m agency. I always take a print out everyday so i have a ‘hard copy’. Any queries i can always have a look and see what i did that day.I can’t read the card so am just covering myself.

hi mate
if your driving trucks with both types of tacho, IMHO i would take a print out cos of the difference in the time as we know digi tacho use UTC time but analogue ones don’t so if you drove the two take a print out just for that reason as it my help you for you time keeping

This is common myth but it is not true. You can drive a mix of digi and analogue without needing to do a printout at all unless you for some reason need to make a manual entry on the back. If you do get stopped all the info is on the card and VOSA will have a reader to get the information off it if they need it.

I wouldn’t interpret that as a requirement to carry enough paper to print out every day for the last month. If the ministry wanted that much information off the card they would have you take it out and put it in their reader to get the information off it in a much more useful (to them) format.
It’s hard to be sure though as to what they mean when they say you need “sufficient” paper, but if you have a spare roll and it’s still not enough then I can’t see them doing you for it.
