hi, are there any bans or restrictions when using a vehicle spectacle lift on a recovery truck in Europe, not for commercial recovery but I was looing to put the old Bedford on the back and spec the camper behind, any info would be great, oh and of course merry Christmas to one and all .
i would think you’ll be on dodgy ground here, because it’s not recovery and you’ll effectively have a trailer over 750kg unbraked, unless you can rig something up, like what you can do to activate the towed vehicle brakes when the towing vehicle brakes when using an A frame.
but i’m not claiming to be an expert on the matter
Even A frames are a bone of contention in the 4x4 community

even when both vehicles have been converted to both brake when the towing vehicle brakes?

Hi Steve, I will be honest I am not sure but the forums and arguments where endless and never seemed to be resolved.
I dont bother towing as my 4x4 makes it to places on its own

As Drift says, it’s a big can of worms hovering over a grey area. Even with a system to operate the brakes on the vehicle behind, c&u regs come in to play too.
Would it not be less hassle, and possibly expense, to stick a trailer behind the Bedford and put the camper on that?
I do know that in Spain you have to have all 4 wheels off the ground ie… the towed vehicle has to be trailered.

Yes that’s right, but if the outfit is UK registered, then I believe its tolerated because its legal here. (assuming the towed vehicle has working brakes).
A friend towed a Defender 90 Land Rover all over Europe behind an 18 tonne horse box for many years clocking up around 100,000 towed miles without incident. Couple of years ago he got pulled into a VOSA check point almost within sight of home on his way back from France.
No braking system on the LR, they weren’t happy and wouldn’t let him proceed. He unhitched it & his Mrs drove it home. LR now has a working air op system

Hi. You can not tow a vehicle on an A bar in Europe any more, the vehicle has to be on a trailer. As regarding a spec lift ring Mick Gould on 01580 879333 he has many recovery vehicles on the continent all the time, he will give you all the information you want.
