One of the legitimate reasons to use the 3rd lane would be to pass a wide load, but is it ok for a wide load to use it to pass normal traffic running at max speed, ie 55mph+.
Seen this the other day, wide load needing a full 2 lanes in and out of 1 and 2, and 2 and 3 on more than one occasion, it seems 55mph was to slow for him and his ■■■■■■…
Don’t think it’s legal mate, but like caravanners and cars towing trailers it happens all the time quite simply because there is nobody about with the power to stop them.
Don’t think it’s legal either, but what I do know is if his wide load had sliced into the side of a car he was overtaking in lane 2, and worse still into the car’s occupants, he would have been in seriously deep ■■■■.
Yet another example of a ■■■■ with a Class 1 I reckon
Any long or wide loads I have had in the past, I have took NO chances with, and erred on the side of caution, …as I am sure most of us on here have.
I don’t think he should of gon into lanes 2 and 3 to overtake slower traffic, but it does bug me when cars trundle along the motorway at 45-50 in lane 1.
I believe these drivers cause lots of motorway congestion as they are just not keeping up with traffic flow and are effectively a rolling road block on a 3rd of the motorway.

This has always bothered me to,but I’ve recently been given a 65 plate Ford Fiesta (the kind you see driving how you describe) as a courtesy car as the misses had an accident and to be fair the car sit happiest at around the same speed that lorries are limited to. With it being an eco car, you get your best mpg results around that speed and it’s not revving it’s nuts off. Anything over 60 and it isn’t a nice place to be at all.
I was using the slip to join the m25 from the a1 the other day and a loaded 6 wheeler was right up my chuff flashing me to get a move on, thing is I was.
It’s put a new perspective on it for me, it’s still annoying but what can you do.
I did pull out to pass it while he was sat behind a slower NFT truck, but the ■■■■■■ driver cut me off in lane 3 to get the wide load out to pass it.
When I use to do wide loads with police ■■■■■■, overtaking in lane 2 and 3 was not a problem, just give us plenty of warning they use to say. oh and the first question was always how fast can you go!!
Speed depends on the category of abnormalitie ie STGO
