Useless Information on Matrix Signs

M25 yesterday.

All four lanes had a “60mph” limit, but right after the first set of warnings lane one had been coned off by the police surrounding a broken down vehicle.

Made a nice change to be told it was safe to do 60 in an obstructed lane rather than showing 40mph warnings and 3 lanes closed when there are no problems ahead.

What’s going on at Silverstone at the weekend? The M40 sign at Beaconsfield is warning of delays there…
And who are they timing when they say Junction? 30miles, 26minutes? Is it me or the Aston Martin that just roared past?

I have yet to come across one that’s been useful to me. “check your fuel level” thanks for reminding me.
This afternoon on the M40 it had 20mph on the matrix signs for about 10 miles and it was the quietest it’s been in ages and no obstructions or traffic at all
M25/M4 split this morning completely choca, stationary all the way back to T5 and after crawling along for 20 mins under a blank matrix sign, all the sudden it flashes up “40 mph”… In stationary traffic :unamused:
Couple of months back on the M3 it said M4 closed and it was like that for about 4 days!!!

On the Eynsham matrix sign today “THINK-DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE”
Not bad, considering there’s a pub opposite

the best ones are about in scoutland esp glasgow area

Thats normally on the matrix sign southbound after you pass Cherwell Valley services.
The thing that gets me with them is when you are sat in stationary traffic what is the point of having ‘queue caution 40 MPH’ flashing, might aswell turn them off.

They always seem more polite in Scotland.

Twentys Plenty

on the M50 toll motorway around Dublin, it says “pay by tomorrow”

Shame we didnt have them for when the guy that ran out of fuel, stopped on the hard shoulder and was struck, maybe a little reminder may have prevented him from running out

If we have reports of an oncoming vehicle, 20’s are always set in the hope that since 50’s and 40’s are ignored that you might actually slow down and be hugely aware of an issue. Good one to remember that.

Technology goes wrong sometimes, what can I say.

By the way people, the reason a sign may be on on the M20 telling you of delays on the M1 for instance is that it assumes that you MAY be going that way and even though it will take you say 2 hours to get to that point, the delay the guys on the incident know will take 4 hours so by the time you get there, the delays will still be ongoing. Its up to you then to take an alternative route.

SIGN UNDER TEST so what

FOG in brilliant sunshine

BEWARE OF BIKES what about one that says…bikers…beware of trucks

Then there are the ones that have not been turned off…cars slow down…or there are no delays, or after diverting ( for eg: from A2/M25 north ) dont go over the bridge, but round the roundabouts, and find it wasnt blocked after all.

Do these idiots realise that there are a lot of drivers who actually take notice of these signs, cost time and fuel…GGGGRrrrrrrrrr

As you come off of the A406 east bound at the A12, the sign there has displayed the alpahbet and numbers 1-9 for the last month.

SIGN NOT IN USE

If anyone needs to be reminded to check their fuel level, then they shouldnt be in control of a motor vehicle.
The same goes for basic maintenance and checks for said vehicle.

I dont understand, as far as i could see there wasnt an issue. And by putting 20mph signs up when, as you say a 40 or a 50 would be more appropriate, i think is more dangerous as you do actually get inexperienced motorway drivers slamming their anchors on and slowing down to the speed that you have set despite it being clear and good visibility for miles.

Cant you cut the power to the matrix signs individually or are they all on one circuit??

What to scotch corner like “wheel nut” mentioned. Thats a hell of a way. Might aswell set the matrix sign down in lands end to “accident in John O’groats”

The matrix sign on the east bound m27 today was like a dot-dot it looked something like this.

so i joined the dots and this is wot came out.

I agree that someone who can’t check the fuel level shouldn’t be in charge of a car but hey, apparently people make mistakes and with the investment in these signs, isn’t it better to use the signs, try to educate and perhaps prevent a death, maybe it’s just me!

So we all know 50’s and 40’s are ignored so let’s say we don’t put any on at all, your doing 70+ and swerve to miss the oncoming car, do you not agree that you habe a better chance of swerving and surviving at 20 than 70■■ We have an obligation to try and protect you even though most stick their fingers up by doing 70+ through ANY advisories or even Mandatories. The fact you didn’t see anything means that either the driver realised his error and turned back or the job had been dealt with and there is a delay in the police calling us to cancel the signs as we are not allowed to deal with oncoming vehicles so it is 100% police lead.

The signs do indeed have their own supply but the signs are maintained by another company and were bound by their response times.

Hell of a way or not, a lot of thought goes into what is put on the sign and just because it may not affect you, I will affect others.

Trucky boy, sign not in use means “don’t ring the HA and complain about an accident ahead and the sign before it said nothing” sign under test means "ignore anything this sign says as it isn’t being used.

Fog in bright sunlight is due to mobile weather stations that sense fog, it’s actually a spiders web over the fog sensor, oh and fog does move, better to tell you there may be fog than have you run into the back of a pile up causes by a fog patch.

Not just an inexperienced driver, if there’s the possibility of these variable speed cameras along with variable speed limits (like the M42), I do the limit it says, so if it says 20, that’s what speed I’ll be doing on an empty motorway, like I used to do on nights.

But, if the inside is 20 and the middle is 40, you’ll see me in the middle doing 40 passing nothing
