Used containers

Due to the imminent move of our 74 year old club treasurer down south to be nearer his family after a recent health scare, our club might be in the market for a used 20 foot container soon to store some equipment. (Depending on our landlords permission.)

Would prefer to be in West Yorkshire, so we can keep the transport cost down.

Not bothered about the colour, as we would probably have to paint it anyhow to keep the local NIMBY’s quiet.

Any recommendations, or if anyone is moving one, and doesn’t want it to go back to the railhead, then no questions asked of course.

Ken.

I know this is no use to to you as I write,so blame it on the Efes at 5 lira a go…Phil White of White Line cabins will have one for sale,I used to move them for him at one time but…it’s in Telford Shropshire…but at least he will give you as starting price.

We buy and sell these all the time but they’re not cheap for a good one. A rule of thumb - the smaller the more expensive…e.g a 40footer is way cheaper than a 10footer. I can pm you a number if you want but make sure you’re sitting down when he gives you the price - transport no probs, it’s what we do. We have a few in the yard at the mo. We’re in Manchester.

TBH there so easy to sell and the prices so stable they’re virtually as good as cash. Isn’t really such a thing as a ‘cheap’ one.

You could probably get an old box body for next to nothing but guess that wouldn’t be secure enough. Having said that anyone can get in virtually anything these days after 5 seconds with a cordless angle grinder.

As a rough guide for you, 20ft dry second hand containers are ranging anywhere from £1100 to £1850 ex our depot in central Scotland at the moment.
You could possibly get a better one off price at an auction or private sale but be careful there is some crap out there.

When your out looking at boxes don’t be afraid to get up on the roof for a look also get the box lifted if possible to check the cross members also check the bottom of the doors for corrosion , usually what happens is the door rubber becomes detached and because the door is rotten there is no way of reattaching it without a bit of surgery.

Obviously our location means we probably wont be able to help you out so I would suggest you try Northern Containers in Stourton , Leeds . The guy we used to deal with has recently retired so I cant give you a contact name but if you give them a phone and ask for sales I’m sure someone will help you out.

There’s a guy in Wakefield on the site that was British Jeffrey Diamond called Stewart Wadkin though a quick look on google says he’s trading as JSW. I’ve hired a couple off him before on building jobs and he was spot on. He could make all sorts of sizes and types for you.

If it’s cheaper to get a 40 foot why don’t you get one and cut it to exactly the size you want?

not sure if any use but theres a spot on carnaby that wrecks portakabins, a guy i know got a frame from there, they were very generous as it got donated, all he had to do was collect which as it wasnt going to far was done by a farmer, it was to be temporay changing rooms for a kids football club, but we have had it 4 years now and its now a storage area, it was in a state when we got it but a bit of diy its been ok… we also got metal shutters to cover any windows and it has been secure and dry…

If you buy one, make sure you send someone in, shut the door and make sure they cannot see any light coming thru

Northern Containers in Stourton, Leeds sell them. You might get it a bit cheaper if it’s for a kids football club etc but as has already been said they tend to hold their money and 20 fts no cheaper than 40 Fts  Didn’t read all the posts, as Alfa man says Geoff retired and I think the guy who deals with second hand boxes is called Steve.
Hope this helps

Price of used containers has gone through the roof. My mate rents out storage containers. When he first started a few years ago a container was £400 to buy. They’re now £1800 plus delivery.

Thanks guys.

Sorry for the late reply, as I can’t get onto TN through my broadband, on either Chrome or Firefox, as it looks like my router is causing a problem, so I’m using my smartphone.

A few people have said NorCon at Leeds, so I’m hoping to have a chat with our landlord this week, so will be in a better position to know which avenue to take, but obviously if the JSW connection is a goer, then being as they are only a mile from our hq, then being as the transport costs would be lower, we could afford a better container.
