Use of the TN forum's PM/email systems

Then may I suggest PMing geebee45 as he is likely to know where the most up to date regulations are to be found

BTW, you’ve raised a perfectly good question, BUT it takes a domestic driving rules discussion off topic, so I’ve separated it and moved it to Feedback where this discussion belongs. dd.

May I suggest we don’t bug people by PM. The thread is public and visible so if someone wants to reply they will. They don’t need ‘helpful’ suggestions as to what they should post on.

What is wrong in asking a member who may have particular specialist knowledge if they would care to part with that knowledge on the forum and adding a link to a particular post■■?

that’s not how forums work !! discussions should be public not prompted and arranged behind the scenes :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Dennis, I believe you have a lot of knowledge on livestock haulage so if there was a post you missed on this subject where your input would be greatly valued are you saying it would be wrong for a member to PM you a link to it??

How do you know he missed it? He might have seen it but not known the answer and so, rather than making something up or posting some pointless nonsense, decided to keep quiet. Or perhaps he had seen it but not yet had time to reply?

What if a member knew he had that knowledge and would appreciate that info - how should he approach the member?

Exactly. All the threads he used to PM me about I had seen and for whatever reason chosen not to contribute to, a fact borne out by me continuing to not contribute even after his PM’s.

if a member has a question he can approach another member directly ( by pm) or via the forums

however i believe it is wrong for a third party to pm members to “help” the discussion along.

I also agree with Paul in the quote above

That’s the whole point ROG. Speaking very generally, there’s nothing “wrong” with that, but the idea of a forum is that you ask the question ON THE FORUM then a member will answer if they wish.

:bulb: If you feel that any subject is really important to you, you could always start a new topic ON THE FORUM instead of using the PM/email system as a personal meddling tool for interfering in, or trying to orchestrate an OP’s existing topic.

IMHO, your point about whether any particular member has specialist knowledge is irrelevant.

I know you can block members we don’t particularly like or who annoy us, can you block PM’s from everyone?

I think with a forum, the whole point is that you say what you need to say in public and not behind closed doors. I have a regular list of members who feel that what they have to say is private although normally it is much ado about nothing :unamused:

Apart from sending a private email or telephone number I see no point of the PM system, if someone wants an argument, I want it out in the open, even a private argument is censored ((ZB)

Yes.

User Control Panel > Board Preferences > third option down, select No. Job done.

Thank you

I agree that posing the actual question privately when it is already on the forum would defeat the object of the forum but asking a member if they can help by supplying a link to that thread seems reasonable to me

I know you can block members we don’t particularly like or who annoy us, can you block PM’s from everyone?

I have had to do just that because I can receive but not reply to PMs and it seemed as though I was ignoring members who contacted me

Not when members have specifically asked not to be contacted in that manner, and not when any member has been repeatedly told that spamming other members with this type of PM has caused them to reconsider the time they spend helping out on the website.

If members wish to reply to a thread they can find those that interest them themselves and choose to reply or ignore as they see fit, when they start to feel obligated due to recieving requests via PM from a 3rd party their own enjoyment of the site suffers.

Clearly what seems reasonable to you is very different to what seems reasonable to normal folk. :stuck_out_tongue:

He knows that, we have exchanged PM’s this very afternoon. :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:
