Walked passed the URTU trailer in Orwell truck stop last week and noticed that 1 of the benefits of joining is improved pay and conditions for drivers!
Now I know they have been quoting this for years, have any of there members had there pay and conditions improved since joining them?
So, let me see now, I join the union, tell my boss about it, and he gives me £5 PH pay rise and a 35 hour week? hmm sounds too good to be true…
I think they mean “theoretically”. If every truck driver was in a union then we could take the type of united action that train drivers do, but we aren’t and we don’t, and that’s why train drivers are on £50,000+ a year and we are on bog cleaners’ wages.

So theoretically, it’s a waste of time being in one, unless of course your a tanker driver!
Yes, I suppose that’s a fairly good analogy, tanker drivers are well paid because they are unionised and the union is able to negotiate better pay and terms for them that they could individually. I believe that tanker drivers are members of UNITE rather than URTU though.
And H.M.Government are planning major reductions to our un-unionised Military personnel while tippy toe-ing around the unionised Civil Servants in the M.o.D.
Joining a Union is theoretically worth it if the Union has the power to take action when it sees fit - and not get “injunctioned” at every turn. Might as well just go the whole hog and make it illegal outright, and call employees on a contract “indentured servants”.

I think you misread it slightly
If you join it means improved benefits and conditions for the union bosses

URTU
Great for representing the individual worker on individual issues - thats it
