Johnny’s review of the XF-105 reminded me of another Urban Myth.
“It is illegal to sleep with your head at the end of the bunk behind the steering wheel. Your head must be (insert any number you’ve just pulled from your arse here) cm’s/inches/feet/metres away from the wheel.”
This was very popular for a while but seems to have slipped down the league a little recently. It was especially good when the teller had a degree of confusion regarding the metric measurement system and informed you it had to be at least 25 centimetres or maybe 10 metres away - some measurement that would mean you sleeping with your head on the drivers seat or down by the trailer doors.
I heard the usual one this week at our place. Whilst talking with another driver on Thursday he said I had run bent on Wednesday because I did 2 10hrs driving shifts back to back, i.e 10hrs on Tuesday and 9.75hrs on Wednesday.

You want to really confuse him then Steve and tell him that given the right circumstances you can legally do 4 consecutive 10 hour driving days.
I bet he also thinks that you can’t take a 9 hour rest at home, those two often go hand in hand.
My mate used to swear that was true. Also advised me that I would be in deep [zb] for not having enough break as only complete 15 mins counted. ie 29 minutes would only count as 15 towards your break.
If you drive nights you must, by law, have a sleeper cab and it must have a night heater fitted.
If you want to take an extended drive (10 hours) you could only do the last hour after a 1 hour break.
His list was endless and he swore he knew 'cos he’d been driving for 25 years
Rob K:
Isn’t there some myth about sleeper cabs must be a certain size as well Neil?
That one comes from when they brought in the (then) new H&S laws about minimum workspace - each worker has the right to a minimum of about 16 cubic feet (I forget the figures now, although I knew at one point as it’s in the CPC syllabus ). Whatever the exact figure, it is based on the size of the “room”, not withstanding any “furniture” (dashboard, steering wheel, seats etc included)…and I remember being highly amused to learn that it is the equivalent of a Volvo FL6.

Funny, the transport manager at Charlie ■■■■’s Instore contract across the road from me says exactly the same thing and after I told him it was a load of boIIox he threatened to report me to my agent if I came back for my next shift in less than 11 hours!

We used to do Traction for Sainsbury’s at Basingstoke and they would not let you back on site the following day unless you had 11 hours off. I once went in there after having 8 off on the split daily rest rule and got ejected off site rather quickly. When i asked why they told me “Sainsbury’s didnt believe in the split daily rest rule” I told them i didnt work for them, i worked for someone else doing traction only to be told " While you do work for us, you obey our rules"
Are these new ones to add to list? I particularly like the second one!
as i understand the rules if you’re double manning overnight your truck MUST have double bunks, if you’re away more than 2 nights in a row you must have a walk through cab

What about the one where the Police noticed that a wagon pulled onto the hard shoulder every 2 Miles, the driver going round the wagon each time beating on the sides. Curious to know what it was all about they pulled him in to be told that he had a load of live Pidgeons which took him over his weight so by banging on the sides every couple of miles he’d keep most of them flying and therefore his weight down
I heard that police once pulled an overweight livestock transporter where the driver was insisting he was correct weight when setting off and the cows muck during the journey must be to blame !!!
