Hi,
I collect military vehicles, and transport them using a low loader. I currently have a Volvo fh12 480, I’m looking to increase the Lorry to Cat 2, how do I go about it? What is involved?
Thanks

Im guessing youre at 46 ton Cat 1 at the moment, the jump to 80ton is quite a big one and would have thought you would need a tri axle unit with double drive and a reduction in final drive ratio at the very least. But then again i could have it totally wrong…

The one I drove for Mammoet moving wind turbine masts and blades was one hell of a beast with a lot of stuff not found on a typical 6x2 and it would work out cheaper buying one already built for the job than trying to convert one you own.
I did drive for a while a Leyland Roadtrain 20 years ago plated for I think it was 56 tonnes and that was effectively a standard tractor unit but I don’t think you could go much above that.

Youre probably right there Conor, one designed for the job from day one is going to be the best option. I think the 6x4’s also have rubber suspension which to convert one would basically be the whole rear end of a standard tractor unit being replaced…
Thanks guys,
im just looking at the options, one already converted would be the way to go, as with everything comes down to cost as I had no knowledge of what was involved thought i would find out. Probably going to have to invest in already converted cat 2
You dont have to buy something fancy if your not running right up to the cat 2 limit, i know several firms who run bog standard midlift Scanias and Man Tgx s on Cat 2 work, you.can run up to the design weight of the vehicle with just a plate and roadtax change when i was Prestons years ago we used to run at 56 ton with a W reg 420 midlift Scania and all i ever did was stick the new tax disc in the window , nothing was physically done to the truck
DSV, they had a couple of scania 6x2 440 at cat2, along with a couple of euro5 man tgx 6x2 26.440 also at cat2.
But they have gotten a couple of Man tgx 26.480 6x4 plated for cat2 work.
A couple of years ago, a firm round here had new fh4 6x2 mid lift and they were told to get it to cat 2 all that was needed was to change the 5th wheel bolts
Sorry
