Update from new class 1 driver

Hi guys hope you are all well and are having a good new year so far…

As some of you know, I passed me class 1 test early December.
I’ve since been in contact with the only firm round my area that takes on newbies (and they self insure so being under 25 that I am, isn’t a problem either) and that’s Turners (soham) out of bicker depot. I did an assessment with them on 3rd Jan, and it went really well, passed, and they offered me full time employment and I start training on 16th Jan. (mon).

Training will last for a minimum of 2 weeks, and will run for longer if required.

If anyone was wondering what turners are paying out of the old browns depot (bicker) for day shift, it’s £115 a day whether you end up finishing early or maxing out a 15hr day, with a few other bits and pieces added on top, but to conclude after deductibles (tax, ni) take home pay will be £500 a week.
Can you please let me know how that compares to other firms around Lincolnshire, is that good or is that Polish peanuts because I don’t know any different as I’ve only done shop work and factory work before going for my artic license so…

Will update again in few weeks.

Thanks for your support.

£115 a day for 8 hours work is great!

£115 a day for 15 hours work is barely above minimum wage…

I don’t do telling people whether their T&C’s are good or not, because I don’t live your life and have the same priorities as you. The only way that you will find out if that is good enough for you is when you actually start doing the job properly. The only thing I will say is; if you feel like you are doing too much for too little, then use them to gain some experience, and keep your eyes and ears open for another opportunity. One will pop up.

Good luck.

Day rates often tempt the driver to cut corners or break the law to get finished early so remember that its your licence and you have a big safety responsibility driving a LGV

Congratulations on getting a start Pickles.

You may remember that I am around the same area as you and will likely be knocking on their door when I have passed Class 1.

That money isn’t bad for this area, though expect you will be doing long hours for it!

ROG makes a VERY important point that its your licence and you need to view this a step to get some experience and then look for bigger and better things

Best of luck!

Good on ya !

Get that all important experience under your belt.

You can get the big bucks at a later date, but it won’t be in the haulage industry

Congrats and well done for getting your foot on the ladder mate. Especially as I hear it can be very hard getting work this time of the year.

Encouraging to hear! :sunglasses:
