Up in smoke

The entire M60 around Manc breaches EU limits for clean air. Yep, I know Manchester stinks, but there is a deadly point that needs airing. I know…unintended.

Highways England has released a report that reveals large sections of the UK road network have excessive levels of nitrogen dioxide, levels that are well above what the EU and World Health Organisation recommends as safe.

‘So what’ I hear some of you say,’ lets talk about satnavs, lightbars and chromed ashtrays’. The point is, the Government believes that thousands die prematurely in the UK, due to exposure to nitrogen dioxide. It is a gas, that you cannot stop entering your cab. There is no filters that will stop it. Particulates may get caught up in the cab filters, but the deadly gas is what you are breathing in, day in day out. Think about that if you have a constant cough, dry throat, stinging eyes, nose bleeds and other respiratory maladies. This could be our ‘white finger’.

Yup, VW are killing thousands.

Thank you very much for reminding me that my Passat is also one that’s affected by the emissions con !! :frowning:

The Germans are still gassing everyone, did they ever stop■■? 30,000 a year in the UK are killed, how many of those are the responsibility of the Germans?

Half a million a year in Europe, hhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm

So you’re blaming VW for all the problems then?

Not the Government who encouraged diesel cars, because they produced lower CO2 emissions than petrol and they’d promised to reduce CO2 and weren’t worried about extra levels of NOx produced by diesel compared to petrol.

And then of course regardless of emissions controls on the vehicle, most only actually work once the engine and exhaust is at its working temperature, so are all those short run trips where the vehicle never get to it’s proper temperature just add to the problem.

.

VW have publicly admitted that their vehicles emit 60 times what they were claiming, so yes VW are responsible for a very large chunk of those 30,000 killed in the UK each and every year.

I’ll admit they don’t kill all of the 30,000, but shall we agree on what 20,000? 15,000? Does it matter? They kill more than all the other manufacturers combined, by a factor of 20 or even 30.

VW’s actions are indefensible, but to claim they kill x number, when there are over 30m vehicles in the UK and 1,2m are being recalled by VW seems a bit over the top especially when there are millions of older vehicles, who only had to meet far lower emission standards and probably due to poor servicing don’t even reach them these days?

If VW were at it, then it is a fair assumption all the other manufacturers have been manipulating their performance and emission figures for test purposes. As professional drivers I think we need to now know the risks we are facing to our long term health being constantly exposed to these gases.

They are recalling 1.2M vehicles that pump out 60 times the amount, so yes VW are responsible for the total output in the UK of 72 Million vehicles, yes they are killing more than everyone else, yes they are responsible for 20,000 deaths at least in the UK a year, 400,000 a year in the EU.

In Europe alone VW has killed at least 5 million people. We remember WWII every year and are outraged about what they did in those 6 years, they have killed more in the last 10…

I Have only one word to say about the drivel you just spouted…

what about the old London buses ?

Perhaps some older members will recall the days before the Clean Air Act - I lived in Sheffield in the 1960s and experienced fog so thick buses were being guided by the conductor at 3 mph because the drivers couldn’t see the edge of the road and otherwise would stray onto the pavement.
Real yellow/orange fog, breathing was like inhaling a Capstan Full Strength. Pollution now is negligible in comparison, thousands died in a London smog in December 1952 alone, most of that air pollution was from industrial and domestic coal burning.

They were re engined over the years weren’t they?
Anyhow, how much energy is wasted making and distributing adblue? Plus, how much fuel is wasted taking trucks back to the dealer to have emission faults corrected?
My solution, get your adblue turned off by the remap people. No more hassles and you’ll still pass the mot on the smoke test.

Stop building on farm land and flood plains -
Lime the fields at regular intervals =

Fit soda lime filter to your vehicle .

There you go , job done , neutralized :grimacing:

I bought a vw touareg a Cpl of weeks before the vw bollox came to light…I wonder how many ive quite happily gassed by now…

Many, many years ago I worked with a fella who used to get through 40 of those things a day and surprise surprise he was dead at 42.

One day I’d run out of my regular smokes (State Express or Stuyvesant) and cadged one of these evil affairs off him - jeez, one drag on that mother was like 10 full days worth of regular cigs in one hit.

How many are driving vehicles that have been remapped, DPF removed, EGR deleted, adblue eliminated ? yes all these can save fuel money and reduce CO2. But they all can seriously raise the NOx and Particle Matter. If your boss / company has interfered in anyway with the engine management or pollution controls then refuse to drive it on the harm you will be doing to everyone else.

Could you really live with yourselves if cyclists were keeling over at the side of the road choking on all of the particle matter that would otherwise have been captured by your DPF had it not have been removed, the few thousand pound a year you will save on fuel will not ease your conscious.

Have you ever flown anywhere on holiday Bluey? Just asking.

So see the cars recalled I take it you can’t just make their emission magially disappear so is it to remove the software? And when they come back does the VED change on them?
