Up and Down Mont Blanc

There have been one or two request for pictures of the roads at Mont Blanc and some have been posted and these were taken this week on the climb up on the French side and the descent on the Italian side.

The start of the climb.

The climb from the control area.

Three shots on the first part of the climb.

Two views of the down road taken from the up, the down road used to be both ways before the up road on the stilts was built. The angle may make it look as if the road is going up but it isn’t.

The Mont Blanc Glacier.

The memorial to those killed in the fire in the tunnel on the 24th of March 1999.

The last bend before the top.

The Thermal Sensor, all trucks must pass through this.

The toll booths at the tunnel entrance, €202.20 one way for my vehicle…

The descent on the Italian side.

Great pics Neil :exclamation:

no neil, i dont mean just driving, customs ,paperwork etc
sometimes the coaches get waved through without stopping as long as you hold up the toll form
wagons seem to wait around for hours also they were pulling you into parking areas last time i was through.
you were under the swiss weight limit i was wondering why you chose the blanc
jon

With customs and the control for the Gotthard for instance it would be about 5 - 6 hours from Italy to the Basel borders, can be quicker than that though and can also be longer, I did it empty, so only had to stop for road tax, last week from Italian border to German border near Singen in just under 4.5 hours.

I chose the Blanc last week for a bit of variety and I couldn’t be bothered with the big Monday morning queue at Basel and the controls for the Gotthard and doing customs with the Transit t-form.

cheers just wondering the pros and cons of blanc/frejus v swiss thats all
3 weeks i will be there
shame i have to buy one years tax for 2 days travel

Bloody hell, I shouldn’t be looking at these pics, there making me miss the continental work!

I really need a couple of trips to Italy now, just for old times sake.

First time I have seen that memorial, whenever I think about that fire, I shudder to realise how close I was. I was just climbing the Italian side when the Polizia waved us into the truckstop at Aosta. Nobody knew what was happening, they told us there was a delay in the tunnel, and it should be open in an hour or so. We waited about 5 hours, then started to realize something serious was going on.
I was amongst the first trucks to be waved in there, if I hadn’t stopped for that brew earlier…
