I was out in a wee puddle jumper thingy and pulled up beside a driving god in his C+E.I was just about to bow down to the great man when I noticed he was clad in hi-vis and had a knob on his wheel.I thought that they were a relic of the past and will be appearing on The Antiques Roadshow soon.
I used to work with a bloke who had a false arm, with a hook type arrangement on the end.
The knob on the steering wheel was essential for him to drive.
I was working out of Palletline at the time,it used to amaze me how he could pull heavy pallets on a pump truck, but he did
It often made me feel quite ashamed when I started whingeing about my “tricky” deliveries
They can make steering easier (maybe I’m used to them because I drive a JCB a lot?) but they have to be positioned right. However, wouldn’t they be hazardous if the wheel had an airbag?

Must have been agency if wearing a hi. viz behind the wheel…(did he also have an earpiece), so can’t be a driving god.
Are steering wheel knobs not common anymore?
Never noticed tbh.
I have had my hand on my knob while driving, since about 1985.
I remember people who had older trucks with no power steering liked them for making manoeuvring easier, but last time I saw one otherwise was on a forklift.
I tried a knob once, it just felt weird so went back to what felt more comfortable. Kept catching it accidentally trying to get into tight entrances.
Hi viz on whilst driving is bad, (unless emergency services, multidrop etc), heard one place has banned em whilst on motorways, wonder if it’s due to some RDC bollox I started last year.
I see lots of Knobs behind the wheel, especially in London [emoji6]
Thought they were banned ?

Pretty much all forklifts have them. Not seen one on a truck for years.

My present truck has got through 3 MOT s with it fitted, and all others I have had before that for last God knows how many years, so I doubt that mate.
I love my knob.
I need one for driving, due to weakness in left limbs, but as said you do want to position them properly used to put them on the vans i drove in previous job, workmate used it for reversing trailers said it was very handy always leave it on so definitely not banned. Not found out what would happen with an airbag… yet haa ha though think (or hope) it would open fine.
I despise them if driving a road unit with one fitted. I keep catching my wristbones when crossing my hands while turning (I know, I know, naughty corner for me). However I find them indespensable when driving a Terberg.
I was also led to believe that they are illegal if fitted to a road vehicle if the driver is not registered disabled. However I’m happy to be proved wrong on that score.
I’ve seen a couple while staring and blowing kisses at the other drivers in the services!

Apparently crossing hands is not a test issue mate, you just have to be fully in control of the wheel at all times…
So take that pointy hat off!

Trust me you needed both arms with no power steering.Knobs are for those who can’t get their heads around palming the wheel with decent power steering and who want to drive a truck like a forklift.Which then just get in the way when driving the thing properly.
Its noted on my licence that I need “any controls for safe driving” just the steering knob in my case, but can’t see its illegal to have one on as with lorries just handy for reversing I’d have thought and some road going plant vehicles have them built into the steering wheel backhoes etc??

Palming the wheel is not allowed pal, on the grounds that you have no control if you slip.
Yes we probably all do it at very low speed, but it’s not going to look good on your test.

Well there ya go. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
Do the Terbergs have them built into the steering wheel like forklifts/plant? or are they detachable?
Guess if they are illegal you’ll get people moaning about Coppers yanking their Knobs off!

Yeah they are built into the Terberg wheel mate.
