Unsecure stone loads

i have a tipper overtake me today on sheffield parkway, me at 50 , him at 50+ who couldn’t be bothered to sheet his load of granite stone , ended up with 11 large chips on my windscreen, 2 were as big as golf balls ,sounded like just like someone has fired a shotgun off as he went past , now its recorded on the roadhawk cab cam , is it worth reporting him or not ?

Yes because it’s his responsibility to cover the losses incurred by your boss

If its your own truck that has been damaged then I’d certainly report it. If its a company vehicle you were driving, then I’d obviously report it to your boss and then let him/her decide if they want to take it further.

well when i got back , it was reported to office , no one was interested , if it was my car , i would be ■■■■■■ off

I had a similar tipper on the A17 ,I backed off a bit but stones were bouncing a lot so I overtook him ,he didnt like that ,when at the next roundabout I got out to tell him ,even though he properly knew ,he locked the door and ignored me !

A year or so back we had a letter from the police about one of vehicles involved in an incident on the A12, they phoned the police and apparently someone had a windscreen damaged by a stone falling from a screener trailer that we were moving. The officer dealing with it told us that it was a pointless exercise in trying to prove it and if we said it hadn’t happened that was the end of it. Ultimately unless you can prove it, it never happened.

I sheet most loads (I gather it’s in the planning for our quarries) but muck etc isn’t normally worth it unless it’s a light load piled high. I do check there’s no debris on the bodysides and tailgate as it’s this that comes off. Stones will not blow off unless they’re dislodged (ie ones resting on and not in the body).

Not that it changes the outcome but I would have thought that the stones came from his tyres rather than the back of the trailer. It’s very easy to pick a load of them up coming in and out of quarries, especially if they’ve got lots of tread on them.

As Muckaway said, stones don’t blow out of the trailer but there really is no excuse not to pull the sheet over. It’s not difficult!

I think he said its on camera

Fair point, I didn’t notice that. Probably worth a try then.

I saw a dropside 4 wheeler carrying some bloody great boulders weighing probably a tonne a piece this week all were on pallets but not secured to the pallets or restrained in any way :unamused: . Glad they didn’t bounce through my windscreen

I have this surreal vision of following a truck carrying huge 1 ton boulders, with them getting blown off & floating gracefully towards my windscreen as we both trundle up the M way at 56mph !

I wont bother when on muck if there are a lot of overhead hazards like trees and wires. On muckshifts the machine driver will normally flatten off the load, it’s when the load is heaped there’s a risk of it coming off. Although it sounds strange you shouldn’t sheet a lot of rubble as bricks and large concrete lumps and also reinforcing wire can shred the sheet.
Look at a lot of muck shifting wagons; Their sheets are fine mesh nets, not tarpaulins as the winding motors would burn out with tarps in high winds.

There’s no excuse not to sheet your load ( not inc muck) unless like I do occasionally you forget

nearly there:

Wasn`t a yellow cabbed/red bodies truck was it?
