Unite rolls out Drivers’ Charter

Interesting read unitetheunion.org/news/unite … s-charter/

As nice as it sounds, its not going to do anything. If my boss saw that he’d fall off his chair laughing.

What a useless pile of drivel!

If they get one to sign up to it I will show my arse.

Naff all :unamused:

A whopping 60hrs a week,how times have changed.
regards dave.

It’s what should be happening, it’s drivers that are stopping it.

So true mac.

They’ve lost the plot. Most of the downward pressures on drivers’ wages is the result of the combination of unviable levels of road fuel taxation, immigration policies, and the transfer of freight from road to rail.Which creates the perfect storm of an over supplied driver labour market and pressures on employers to use wages as a way to compensate for fuel costs. All of which is Labour Party policy and not opposed by the TUC.

As for a 48 hour week would only realistically work on the basis of a 4 days on 4 off rota.

UNBELIEVABLE. I read this forum most days and its full of people moaning about the number of hours you have to work to make ends meet and the low hourly rates. Here’s a union I am proud to be a member of fighting for your rights. If you all got behind this and maybe just maybe you may make a real difference.

There’s a big difference between doing something about the ridiculous EU daily rest allowances,as opposed to going to the other extreme of undeliverable hours limits which would damage jobs not create them.No surprise that the TUC is totally against everything which would work wether in the form of getting out of the EU so that hours regs can be sorted out on a national basis without then being overruled by the EU.Or removing the downward pressures on wages and jobs resulting from pro rail anti road transport government policies and immigration policy.None of which fits the Labour Party agenda which actually runs the TUC.

So you think unite fail its members?, history shows it doesnt fail the members who are prepared to strike to get whats right, we as drivers are the only ones that are to blame for the state of this industry not the unions.

So what happens with Drivers do strike and try to stand up for themselves? The bosses just get the agency mob in to carry on. If all the drivers at my place decided to strike, within an hour agencies drivers would in drafted in and rolling out.

Interesting reading on Unions…

The trend for membership is still going down, they have become less powerful in their aims.

If the unions are fighting a losing battle to get the standards higher, better wages and conditions then what hope do you have of rounding up a band of merry men to change the future?

Employers are sitting on the goldrush of lower transport costs with cheap labour in abundance. They are also reaping in the rewards of cheaper fuel. Gas companies are lowering their prices to keep customers happy and loyal but employers are not raising their wages to keep their staff happy and loyal.

The great divide and conquer rules.

I don’t know what the hours rules have got to do with getting a fair hourly rate, and a maximum working week, can you explain?

To be fair the issue of striking for what’s right was effectively finished when the TUC failed to call a general strike in support of the miners and in opposition to Thatcher’s union reform laws.

While realistically no one could run a haulage business with drivers limited to a 48 hour max week while scope for wage increases is limited by fuel costs and labour market supply and demand.

In just the same way that it isn’t how long drivers drive for which causes fatigue it is all about how much sleep they get between shifts.

In which case it seems obvious that Labour Party policy,in regards to both EU membership, immigration and the shifting of freight from road to rail, won’t allow the TUC and therefore UNITE to sort out those issues regardless of wether drivers strike or not.

Do you think there would be same amount of agency drivers about if full time employed drivers were being payed what they are worth along with improved working conditions?

So do you think there is as many agency driver sat at home waiting for work as there are full time drivers working
