Unions

the nodding donkey:
The problem is organisation. Because drivers on the whole work alone and isolated, it’s difficult to make a concerted stand as a collective. Like it or not, and this is not meant in any way derogatory, but it is very hard as an individual, to stand up, and face the management. It is also easy to replace a single, or a few drivers, rather than the whole workforce in a factory.

I’m a member of URTU.

ASLEF !!!

2 industries that are similar ish.

Stobarts pay £9 p/h for days, I earn £33 p/h.

I did 13 years as a HGV class 2 and didnt earn much more than about £10ish and treated like ■■■.

You need to stick to together.

lolipop:
Unions are only as good as its members.
Unions can get good agreements and T&Cs with management, but from past experience, Drivers once out of the depot will do what they want to suit themselves. On return to the depot ,and among their "mates" they revert back to the "agreements" and the usual cant do this can`t do that
As always Drivers are their own worst enemy, that will never change.

AGREE !!!

Some good replies and kind of reinforces what I thought, that yes good union representation would more than likely help improve things, but would need many many more drivers to take up membership and stick together, and of course the company to play ball and recognise and work with the union.

Thanks everyone.

Ps. Maoster- who do YOU work for? :open_mouth: Sound like a good bunch you got there.

Edited several times due to not being able to spell tonight.

I work fo XPO but I must stress that every single depot is different with regards to T’s & C’s because when Dinglegangle were buying up companies they just kept each particular sites terms. The site I work at is ex Christian Salveson so my terms are probably vastly different to for example an ex Swifts site.

To XPO’s credit they could’ve come in with a big stick and imposed uniformity on the different sites but they chose not to.

URTU

Very good.

I think it would be very unwise for anyone to accept liability in such hazardous employment as ours without union protection.

XPO, really? Yes that’s very good of them to keep the old t’s and c’s. I presume a new start wouldn’t come in with the same terms as you?

Nope, all new starters are started on the old contract with ONE major difference; old contract pays full sick pay for 12 months, new starters get full sick pay for 10 months, thereafter it drops to 70%.

This is probably one of the reasons that full timers are outnumbered by agency guys massively.
