Anybody out there who remembers UCC in Reading?
Yes Brigham Road, the garage I worked at in the 60’/70’s did running repairs for them. They ran a couple of BMC 701’s and a BMC WEK 100. The WEK (I think?) was replaced with an ERF fitted with a five pot Gardner engine and I remember it having diff problems, it sat in our yard with the halfshaft’s out and local kids chucked sand into the hubs and axle casing! Our Foreman threatened the kids parent’s with the bill for new bearings etc.
Pete.
By the time I joined them in 1971 they were in Lynmouth rd running Thames traders and Guy big j’s amongst others

We serviced the Trader’s as well now that you mention them, I had to grease the propshafts for our regular ‘greaser’ lad as he was too short to reach them without standing on a box! They were a lot higher off the ground than the BMC’s we were agent’s for. I thought they were in Brigham Road but Lynmouth Road sounds familiar, which one was the cold store in?
Pete.
lynmouth rd was where all the meat wholesalers were…Weddels, Swifts, Assoc Meat and Towers in the cold store but i think there was one in brigham rd as well!

Ah, I remember now! We serviced Weddels trucks as well, BMC’s again I guess though they may have had a D Series Ford later? I think there was a tie-up with them and UCC. Macmeats was another company whos vans we repaired, all a long time ago now.

yes UCC and weddels owned by same company…a lifetime ago!
Hi, I vaguely remember the Reading depot but I don’t recall ever going to it. On BCL tractors and trailers we regularly delivered to the Weddel depot and sometimes loaded at the abattoir there. They used to take their ram on a lead to the local sweetshop and buy him sweets. they used to say that one day he would lead the sheep into the killing area and he wouldn’t be coming out.
