Ungritted roads, oopsie

Thankfully no injuries as reported but that would of been one hell of a early wake up call for the residents

Driver must have had some grit.

I suppose he would just have to grit his teeth and bear the fall out from his employer [emoji23]

The two most ironic things in life are a stolen police car and a gritter skidding on ice

I like the line" Police found the yellow lorry stuck in the semi-detached house"

Can’t see how the noticed it, as it blended in quite well.

Soon make superintendent with detective work like that Holme’s.

Not driving to the conditions. You would think he would know better but then again half the time they grit the roads when it’s not really necessary. Oh, we will better grit them incase some totally incapable driver has an accident( in this case the gritter driver) and sues us or we will get a bit of overtime out of this. Tax payers money, who cares! Apart from that the salt rots our cars to bits but again, who cares.

Rant over.

A lot of gritter drivers don’t drive LGV’s full time and are on call from their day jobs with the council or contractors.

Once talked to some guys who had worked 36 hours with out a rest break, also all the office bods had LGV licence so they could get the standby pay.

Maybe not in your area but in most they drive for the council all year long doing other types of work. Saw one a couple of weeks ago, not gritting but driving like damon hill with all his flashing lights going. What a plonker. :unamused:

Why cant gritters have some sort of device to throw the salt out in front of them and not out of the back ■■

They could drive backwards

Good point, never thought of that …

they used to have “back to front gritters” fitted tae the ex ww2 Macks when I started on the highways in the 70s,the salt/grit came out behind the cab in front o the drives. The big problem was it rotted the chassis out of the vehicles very fast ……strange thing the Mack 1946 chassis stood up to this abuse for 30yrs…iirc they tried it on a Maggie 6x6 and had to change it back as the chassis was done in one season!

Trouble with the front gritting is it needs a few vehicles to drive over the grit before it works properly according to the council, so even gritted quiet roads aren’t actually that gritted. Easier solution would be not to grit the roads then people would drive more carefully expecting ice, not bomb around like it’s the middle of a heatwave and come unstuck.

I remember with that snow we had around March, they didn’t grit overnight so was no use to any nighttime drivers and just had to adjust to the conditions. Saw very few crashes.

He will have a frosty relationship with his gaffer from now on!

It’s snow joke!

I’ve heard (from a pal who drives a gritter) that you’re not considered a proper gritter/plough driver until you’ve stuffed it into a ditch or building.

So by your “mates” theroy, all those numbtys that keep slamming trucks into bridges are professional then…

At the risk of stating the bleedin’ obvious a gritter by its very nature carries a diminishing load therefore it’s handling characteristics are constantly changing. If you add in a driver who fails to appreciate that the end result is sometimes expensive.
