I spend a lot of my working life queuing at the Cathorpe interchange and M1 J21 M69. Why are these junctions so badly designed? It must cost millions in congestion every year. When, if ever, will they be changed. Maybe the Government could use some of the dcpc fees that are now rolling in to do something useful and sort these hell holes out.
The worst bit of motorway for that that I can think of is the M60 going clockwise just after the Trafford Centre. Narrow lanes and so many junctions and splits and joining slip roads in such a short distance. Makes you wonder who thought it was a good idea in the first place.
Another example is the M25/M26 junction.
A 2 lane slip going south…completely daft.
And no exit for 20-odd miles on the 26…should be a slip to the A21.
The next time you’re stuck waiting to be unloaded or similar, have a squint through this website, it tells you a lot of why certain things did / didn’t happen with regards to motorways. http://www.pathetic.org.uk/

I bet when they built it, It was adequate next someone will be along to tell me that Barton Bridge used to be only 2 lanes wide and there was only one Bridge over Thelwall
So will the new Runcorn crossing improve the 'old M56-M62 link referred to and then we’ll have the 3rd Thames crossing and free flow over Dartford and maybe when the new HS2 line is built we may have more options to rail freight rather than Road freight ?
M53 jnc 5 slip to nowhere should have gone towards Wales?
M60 jnc 25 slip to the Semms road that is going to be half built starting in a couple of years.

They just gave Catthorpe upgrade the go-ahead last month, don’t know how long it will take to do though.

There is a cracker on Mancunian Way… the sliproad to no where…

in 1977 it wasn’t there they excavated sale water park for the m63 as it was, then had to build the bridges! And yes Barton bridge was two lanes wide at the time, one the hard shoulder and the other one was the carriageway! As tarrman says the m62 joins at the Eccles interchange but you have the one joining underneath just before that coming out of GODS COUNRTY MANCHESTER on the m602! Then you’ve the NOW narrow lanes UPTO he m61 split, but it’s like anything, WE USED TO HAVE HORSE AND CART UP HERE YOU KNOW!
you have to remember as well the designs aren’t bad, it’s the BAD DRIVERS WHO USE IT, that make it so!
