I have a question regarding what I call unfair deductions.
Worked for an agency for 3 weeks who subcontract their work through another agency. I have been told of a rate but paid a different rate and today I was informed that the Client deducts 45min from our hours for a break. This I was not informed of and so far the agency owes me nearly 9 hours of pay. So basically I work for 8 hours but only get paid for 7 and it looks like the agency swallows up the additional 15 minutes which adds up to a few good hours but of course I don’t get paid for them.
This seems underhand and excuses are flying everywhere, I’ve told them that unless its sorted out today I will not work for them anymore.
I think you will find that is the norm throughout the industry unless you are on salary. 45 minutes a day is unpaid. If you worked in a factory, you would clock off for dinner wouldn’t you?
That is fair but I plan my week on a certain hours to be worked and doing it this way I’d have to work 9 hours instead of how they put it 8 per day. That leads me to believe I will be paid for 8 no matter what.

As Wheel Nut said it’s usual to be stopped 45 minutes per day for the break, most agencies have a minimum 8 hour day that the company will be charged for regardless of the hours you work.
If your total spread-over is 9 hours then you will usually be paid for 8.25 hours unless there’s an agreement that they will stop an hour for the break.
Who’s choice is it for you to knock off after an 8 hour spread-over there’s or yours, do they tell you to finish after you’ve been there for 8 hours ?
