Underpaid PAYE

Did a few extra shifts last year 17/18 and underpaid my PAYE BY £736. They left me know about it last November and to pay it by Feb 2nd. Phoned them in December to ensure it wasn’t a scam and they confirmed it wasn’t. Said I couldn’t afford to pay it and they said ring us after Feb 2nd to resolve. What will happen?

This year I noticed that I’m short of £2.8k underpayment of tax.

Check your tax code on your payslip to make sure it’s what HMRC say it should be as that might explain the variance. Do you do anything like cycle to work that’s pretty tax income that might confuse things?

Usually they adjust your tax code down for the following year to recover outstanding sums but for that much I don’t know if they will accept that

Have you checked the figures properly or have you taken HMRC figures to be correct . They do make mistakes .
I had a demand from them for £1250 underpayment…
When I checked the figures they had assumed that I had worked all the remaining financial year for a company instead of the 1 week that I had done as an agency driver .
I had to provide the proof that I hadn’t worked as they claimed !
Ever since then I check all my dealings with gov departments very thoroughly.
