Can you be bothered to do your own paperwork or would you rather someone else did it and took a cut of your pay for the privilege.
Think that sums it up.
Self-employed is better! LTD better still!
Have done self-employed & am currently Ltd Co - Ltd Co is better for me; never done Umbrella, was offered it, but didn’t like the sound of it and having to pay for the priviledge!!
I have done both , I now work under a ltd company which I find much better . The main reason I changed to a ltd co is because my mum’s friend is very high up at hmrc and has told me they have plans to look into the umbrella companys and she had said many drivers will have a rather nasty shock in store and some very big bills coming their way .
It’s not just our trade that use umbrella companys , the I.t trade use them a lot and quite a lot of those have already been given big tax bills going back years .
Agency’s like to put people onto these schemes to save themselves money , it’s in no way to help us earn more money as they like to tell us .
One thing is if you go down the ltd route is that you must work for a few different company’s

HMRC won’t be looking at umbrella companies for a long time yet, at least until the economy recovers, and then at the same time they will be looking at bogus S/E as well, so even as a Limited Company there’s still a good chance you will come under their scrutiny unless you use more than one agency, especially as the coalition started a review of the whole IR35 system back in the budget of 2011.
From what I know…i.e. very little, you really need to be with more than one agency. This seems to be the deciding factor. You can be said to be genuinely freelance then.
If you are listed with more than one agency, then they compete with each other not so much over hourly rates (which you only cherry picked the best ones to start with right?) but with NOTICE!
Agency 1 offers you some £10ph for next week on Thursday of the previous week,
Agency 2 offers you some £10ph for monday late morning on monday early morning.
Who ya gonna go with?
I’m often turning down better hourly rates from some agencies, because they simply cannot get their oar in on time!
I don’t want to be offered £18ph work on a sunday night on sunday tea time! I’ve been up all day FFS! I’ve not had a 45 hour weekly rest FFS.
Offer me the sunday by wednesday of the previous week, and it would be a different matter - but alas no.
