Whilst out and about I notice:-
More female truckers in the West Sussex area.
More black truckers in the London area.
More Immigrant truckers in the England area.
What I don’t see though is Asian truck drivers. Plenty of Asian taxi drivers - but an Asian truck driver is as seemingly rare as a female cabbie or a white English bloke waiting at tables.
Even when in Leicester, I’ve not seen an asian truck driver. Anyone else noticed this? I’ve never seen a black female trucker anywhere either.
btw. By “truck” I really mean C+E I should point out. Puddle jumpers and prams don’t count.

There’s plenty of white females in dressing gowns at petrol stations in surrey.
They don’t look like they’ve popped down from the Gym either.

Same reason everytime I seem to book a taxi an asian guy turns up. Am i racist for even noticing that?not racist,just normally observant…if you come out of Birmingham airport,or mancs airport,and look for a taxi,you have to look twice to realise your not in downtown Bangladesh,

It might arguably be fair to say that the Germanic/Nordic ethnic group is genetically predisposed to making good drivers and pilots etc more often.Just like the ethnic African group makes good athletes and musicians more often.While the road casualty figures for Asian and African countries seem to go along with that.Which leaves the question of the slavic group and which suggests that colour isn’t exactly everything.While the PC lot would probably say that such a view is ‘racist’.
I had wondered about this. Truck driving is essentially machine operation and historically it’s Europeans, especially northern, who have pushed forward the boundaries of mechanics and engineering. We seem to have a natural fascination with and talent for it. Another angle on that is the more clever you are, the more likely you are to be a bit of a loner and a bit nerdy. Trucking being the ideal career for that kind of temperament.
Lot of Asian taxi drivers though. Great perk is that when young women have no money, the understanding taxi driver suggests they just park here and “talk to the boss” behind a skip.

The first point is spot on.But the requirements of the job regards working alone etc are the same for all drivers wherever they are in the world.As I said it’s arguably the relative road casualty rates of Northern Europe v Africa and Asia which seem to be the confirmation of the main point that the Germanic group make as good drivers as the African one makes athletes and musicians.Among other similar comparisons.
This thread is surreal, we all have our own likes and dislikes we are are all products of the way we were brought up by our parents (probably the main reason so many long term drivers are white), there is no right and wrong about nor which job you should have to suit your skin tone.
We have strengths and weaknesses and skills and aptitudes, some of these things are hereditary some are the results of conditioning over generations.
One thing we have in this country, but shared with all countries in varying degrees is discrimination, in India its by caste, in Britain its by class not colour.
How many MPs and Peers are working class men or women whatever their colour might be, how many lads who went to a secondry modern and left school at 15 are now heading multi million pound companies?
We get dished out a set of cards when we are born, some it works for, some it doesn’t, the labour and tory governments of the last 40 years proved they still hold fast to the class system by destroying the grammar schools which in many cases allowed them to better themselves, but they couldn’t pull the rope up quickly enough after them, Thatcher included who was a grammar scholar herself and should have behaved better.
The class system doesn’t worry too many of us, we accept who we are and do the best we can with what skills we have, us genuine working class are not in any way envious of the toffs who look after each other and primarily themselves (with few notable philanthropical exceptions over the years) at the expense of the working class because we expect no better of them, they have always been like this.
Our working classes do have a problem though in that the grammar schools taught people to think for themselves, not to just remember what they are told (which depends on who’s telling) and repeat it for an exam pass, which might give a clue as to why the grammars had to go, a population where too many can think for themselves isn’t so easy to mind control.
Whilst our working class believes what its told by our owners and controllers and their mainstream media from cradle to grave, the situation and status quo will never change, added to this is there’s more to the massive immigration we’ve seen over the last 20 year especially than meets the eye, it suits those in power that the people are divided, divided people are simple to rule, a united people of 70 million who finally at long last realise the state is not their friend is a formidable force.
The enemy is not the white or black or brown or yellow man, the true enemy is the one with power over all of us whatever our colour, the one dividing and ruling, the one who’s making obscene fortunes form working class misery.

This would be almost impossible to do in haulage. But taxi’s, restrants, news agents, shops, importing goods, take aways ect are what there community’s are already largely into. be hard to get into haulage now, and has been for decades and almost impossible to skim off the top in it ither.

They’re just not interested in driving trucks.
It’s the same when I’m out and about on my narrowboat, I’ve probably seen 2000+ other boaters, both owners and holiday hirers. I’ve seen one black man, and one family of Asians on other boats in that time, everybody else has been white. Not necessarily English, you see lots of Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans on holiday boats and for some reason every other hire boat on the Llangollen canal seems to have a family of Norwegians on it.
It comes under discussion on a canal forum I visit and the general conclusion is that there is no hostility or discrimination involved, just that the ethnic minorities don’t have the any interest in British post-industrial heritage and so choose to do something else instead.

I like this explanation a lot as well as the in built temperament one. Maybe the genetic temperament thing goes some way to explaining the paucity of black drivers, and the entrepreneurial family culture of building cash businesses up from scratch goes some way to explaining the absence of Asian drivers. First generations went for transport in some cases, I remember the Sikh bus conductor stereotype from the 70s - don’t know if that existed in real life or was off a TV show. But first generation Asians who didn’t come in as doctors went for things like corner shops and restaurants then sent their kids to uni to go ahead and be engineers or business managers. Trucking just didn’t figure in that evolution. Eastern europeans aren’t coming in with the same kind of culture or network and because of the EU have no need to go for citizenship and so don’t build up established settled local networks in the same way. Interesting.
Ive come across one Sikh c&e driver, he worked for walkers (crisps) out of Leicester, we were in their peterlee depot, I was delivering he was trailer swapping.
I’ve probably seen around a dozen black guys,I’ve only seen one around Newcastle, we was working for pollock scotrans, no black females.
Considering they make up about half the population you see so few females driving that they still get a double take. That said when I worked at ASDA Washington there were four there, out of about 250 drivers mind.
I’ve not used taxis for about 25 years so I’ve no idea who/what drives them around here.
They should make a new film called Black Men Can’t Drive Trucks
